Mooney axed as Reds coach

Queensland Reds coach Phil Mooney has been axed after two seasons of his three year deal with the Super 14 franchise.

The Queensland Rugby Union board met in Brisbane on Friday morning and Mooney has just recently departed from talks with chief executive Ken Freer where he was told of the decision.

Mooney took over from Eddie Jones after the disastrous 2007 season but has only managed to take the battling Reds to six wins from his 26 matches in charge.

The QRU say the Mooney's axing is immediate so they can begin their search for a new coach with former NSW Waratahs coach Ewen McKenzie, dumped as Stade Francais coach this week, one of the names in the frame.

"Announcing this decision now gives us time to recruit a new coaching team before pre-season training gets underway," the board said in a statement.

The news is the latest in a turbulent off-season for the Reds, with star play Berrick Barnes defecting to the Waratahs and forwards coach Mark Bell axed, backs coach Damon Emtage resigning, chief recruitment officer Ben Whitaker quitting and manager Brendan Morris also dumped.

God it must be painful to be a Reds' fan...

Whatever the Reds do, they better not be farking serious about luring McKenzie....

Should try to lure Nucifora or some one else, but not McKenzie...

Thanks for the news Slim293. I still don't think the new coach is going to do a better job than Mooney would.
