I move tmove that we rename the competition the "It's my ball, and no-one else can play with it" cup

Anyone know if this is on Rugby Pass, or are there only the two televised games available for...watching?

As much as it's an utterly pointless comp, I'm interested to see some of the up and coming players get a run out.

So the welsh backed out and its an all english cup, this would have been a prime opportunity to turn this into a real development competition. Imposing restrictions on number of first team players and banning internationals that have played within x amount of time therefore forcing clubs to rest players and offer real development for A league players to play along side first team players without it being against a full strength first team. Just my thoughts.

That, and inviting the Championship clubs to have a crack at the bigs boys (shorn of their big boys).
Personally, I'd have restricted players based on minutes/matches played last year, rather than age/caps - mildly tougher for the casual fans to work out, but way more accurate at resting those who are being overplayed.

An opportunity missed on all counts.

Including championship clubs would have been brilliant,
Include the previous season's relegated from the prem plus 2nd 3rd and 4th from the previous seasons champ,
Four pools of four

Missed opportunity to draw some more attention to the championship sides

Yes and that would have kept the same format as last year. Totally agree on the development competition basis. This whole comp could be played during the AI weeks and 6N weeks, with the final the week after the 6N to give internationals another week off. Total of 11 weeks for event, would mean less Prem games, but that would be a good idea, as it would increase the importance of the games, and also mean top players would be playing a greater percentage of league games.

For internationals take them put based on caps or minutes but they shouldnt there. Just means a forced 2 week rest after europe.

For non international prem restrict the number you can have in there (prem player = player thats played more than 300 prem minutes last season. Lets say 7 in the starting xv and 3 bench. Less than 300 prem mins played last season and they are free to be in ths team outside of the above restriction. ( 7 and 3 are just random numbers not sure how many id have but around that)

Intoduction of championship sides is a good idea actually.

Who is higher premiership a leage team like Exeter braves or championship teams? Be good to have a comp with 3 different levels. Champ teams lower than prem but established well drilled teams. Prem + a league players is a mixed bag, we'd see some good contests.

Just put all games the 2 weekends before AI and 6N giving forced rest before the international matches for those players.

Why do you guys think they havnt done this? All the talk of player welfare, to many matches/minutes played compared to say wales/scotland/ireland and RFU had a prime opportunity to take a step in the right direction. Why wouldnt they. Seems a no brainer...

Why haven't they done this...same as most reasons, money.

Wasps Press Conference Notes

Academy Manager Jon Pendlebury spoke to the media today ahead of Saturday's Premiership Rugby Cup opener with Gloucester Rugby at Kingsholm (kick-off 3pm).

Premiership Rugby Cup competition
  • This competition is a pathway for youngsters to make the first-team.
  • It provides a great opportunity for lots of lads to wear the Wasps jersey.
  • It's another cup to try and win. If you ask any player, they want to win cups and championships so we're taking this very seriously.
Young players
  • They want to play, put themselves in a position where they're starting and can become an international player one day.
  • The younger players want to get on that journey and want to start and play well and get the best foot forward, whether they start or are on the bench.
  • Some are selected week in, week out at schools but now it's about selection, it's tough and it's competitive as it should be.
Team news
  • The senior guys have just come off a six-week block of Premiership and two weeks of European action so guys have been rested and some will be going away for Autumn Internationals too.
  • There are a lot of guys who have represented us in the Premiership Rugby Shield that'll be involved this weekend.
  • There are a number of guys that I've pencilled in with Dai (Young) that we want to see start and others we want to see come off the bench as well. We want to get a number of them involved.
  • We've asked some guys to come in and commit a bit more to training this week so some have shifted university lectures around but they see the reward and recognition in that because they'll be included in the match day 23.
Gloucester preview
  • We're going to go down there with some things we want to try and some things we want to play around with but also to continue some combinations we've been looking at too.
  • Gloucester are an immensely proud team and especially at Kingsholm.
  • They'll have a good crowd and they're probably approaching it with youngsters getting opportunities as well.
  • It's going to be a good, tough game. They play an exciting brand of rugby and they're trying to change a few things this year but we're looking forward to it.
Captaincy
  • We might have one, two or three captains for the game, or one for each half.
  • We want to spread this around. We don't want to just use this as a playing opportunity but also for a personal development and growth aspect.
  • There are some bits we're doing off the pitch with players. We want to see what opportunities we can create in training in the week but also at 3pm on Saturday afternoon as well.
*These press notes suggest the Cup will be used the way it should to rest or test out squad players. But why couldn't this approach be formalised for credibility of a competition and cup win.
*Interesting to note they are guessing what Gloucester will do. Again, if this had been formalised as a development comp, then I sssime guessing would not have to happen.
*Leadership and rotating captaincy testing ground is interesting too.
*Completely agree this is a missed opportunity to join up with the Chamionship.

Worcester Warriors
team to face sale

Now im not a worcester fan but im putting up this team as its what i dont want to see in this comp, sale have put out a young sode to develop where as worcester have pretty much put out a first team.

Now they have the right to do it fair play they aint winning the prem so they see this as i target, i just dont want other teams having to put out a strong team rather than deloping the young lads due to knowing they are just going to get beat if they dont.

Still think we need official rules stating this comp as a more development comp to stop a first team going against an a league team.

Sorry put my post at same time as yours but fair play to sale for using the comp for what it should be.

Not cool from Worcester.

I can understand them wanting to give a bit more game time to Shillcock following his return from injury as well as more experience for Lawrence, but the rest is really not in the spirit of the competition.

I don't really have a big issue with players coming back from injury (Well if they have been out for like a month).

It's a risk from worcester though injuries in a pointless fixture especially to players playing well and having plenty of game time could hurt their prem chances

Another view is to give their players more game time to get their confidence up and pick up some form ready for the premiership. I don't like it either, but when they risk relegation it's understandable.

Where are these games being shown? Is ot bt sport or sky?
