New Stormers coach Rassie Erasmus will assemble his provisional 40-man Stormers training squad for a 10-day training camp in Goeorge, from Monday, 10 December to Friday, 21 December. The squad is as follows: Gio Aplon, Andries Bekker (didn`t go to the Sharks after all), Gcobani Bobo (from the Sharks), Schalk Brits, Schalk Burger, Juan De Jongh, Jean De Villiers, Dylan Des Fountain, Robbie Diack, Isma-eel Dollie, Nico Du Plessis, Ruaan Pienaar, Dewaldt Duvenage, Earl George, Adriaan Fondse (major gain from the Bulls  ), Schalk Ferreira, Deon Fourie, Peter Grant (didn`t go to the Sharks then), Juan Harris, Rito Hlungwane, Conrad Hoffman, Wylie Human (from the Lions), Conrad Jantjies, Turdy January (from the Lions), Tiaan Liebenberg, Francois Louw, Pieter Louw (didn`t go to France then), Justin Melck, JD Moller, Brian Mujati (major, major gain from the Lions  ), Pieter Myburgh, Sireli Naqelivuki, Morgan Newman, Hanyane Shimange, Ross Skeate, Corne Uys, Francois V D Merwe, Janro Van Niekerk, Luke Watson. Not considered for the preliminary group due to injury: Eddie Andrews, Bolla Conradie, Paul Delport. Also, it seems as if either Schalk Burger or Jean De Villiers will take over the captaincy from Watson. And of further interest: while former coach Fester seemed to spend the off-season working on his fishing or golf swing, Rassie`s been out and about, looking for some young local talent. And he seemed to have found a few- centre Juan De Jongh, played SA Schools u/18 this year, tighthead prop Ruaan Pienaar played SA Schools u/19, lock Earl George comes up from the WP u/21`s, as does hooker Deon Fourie. And 2 completely left-field early selections are lock Rito Hlungwane, straight out of the amateur club scene, and Jarno Van Niekerk, young tighthead prop who played for Paarl Boys` High in 2007. Interesting to see such a lot of tight 5 youngsters, indicating that finally someone`s identified that particular weakness. And while 2008 doesn`t look like it`ll be a vintage year for the Cape, at least it looks like Rassie is getting his ducks in a row for 2010/11, by the looks of things. Long-term planning, now there`s a foreign concept in the Stormers ranks of the last few years......
