Very sad news over the weekend for all rugby lovers, especially us Saffers. Former Bok tighthead prop, Tommie Laubscher, was tragically killed in an auto accident on the weekend. Tommie was run over and killed not far from his farm in Vredenburg, 20km outside of Cape Town. Apparently he stopped along the road to give assistance to another motorist, who hit an animal along the road. Tommie was apparently on his way to go hunting with his sons at the time. Tommie made his debut for the Boks in 1994, and played 6 test matches under Kitch Christie in 1994,95. He was known as an honest grafter, a real powerhouse scrummager and not much of an athlete. Anchoring the scrum was manna from heaven for Tommie, and it was precisely because of his immense scrummaging prowess that he got his Bok callup in 94. In typical Kitch Christie fashion, he went around to all the looseheads in the Currie Cup, and asked who was the strongest scrummaging tighthead in the country, hence Tommie`s belated Bok call-up on the eve of his 31st birthday. He played 6 tests for the Boks, 43 games for Boland and more than 100 games for Western Province in the Currie Cup. Ended his career with a swansong season for the Lions, in either 1997 or 1998(can`t remember exactly). "Nag ou Grote!"
