Carter probably comes closer than any other: at his best he's a good tackler, excellent kicker, fast, and probably the best tackle-breaker currently wearing a number 10 jersey. But Richie McCaw, while still great, is past his best (more and more I think his main asset on the park is his leadership, and the general confidence boost he seems to give the rest of his team — not sure how you'd represent this in game...), and Ma'a Nonu is explosive, but still flawed. Conrad Smith I'd rate as up there in the nineties. He's a rock in defence, and slippery as anything. But even then, he can accelerate well, but he doesn't have the pace of many other backs over longs stretches. And it terms of his kicking game he's far more lacking than Nonu (who cops a fair amount of flak for this (non-)aspect of his game). But the key thing, I think, is that players' particular qualities are recognised. Smith's defense, Nonu's ability to break three tackles in a row before spilling the ball, Spies's power and speed, et cetera, et cetera. This has been said with regard to star players already, but one of the weaknesses of Rugby 08 was that certain players (especially Brian O'Driscoll and Tana Umaga) could simply do no wrong. Bottom-line: overall stats shouldn't necessarily tell the whole story. It's good to have tactical concerns tied up to different individual skill levels. Do you look for a 10-12 combo with two good kicking options, or opt for a line-breaker in at Inside Centre? A counter-attacking fullback, or a dependable defender with a long boot? Good scrummager or a prop who can actually run? Do you have good all-rounders, or pick players gifted in different specialist areas? It depends on the type of game you want to play and the options you want to have on the field.
