Hi
next year I'm thinking about going to the university of South Wales as it's the best choice to do what I want to do as my career. I already know that rugby is even more thort about in wales than it is in England and I was just wondering if I did go to that uni what would the rugby be like ?

Ah, that's the University of Glamorgan/Newport amalgamation.

Rugby is a huge part of life in all of South Wales, so you can guarantee it'll be supported.

The UoSW isn't of as high a quality as somewhere like 'UWIC', which is a specialist sports college, but it's definitely intense. Uni rugby used to be the dirtiest games you'd ever play, but that's definitely calmed down a lot now. It's definitely a fantastic social scene to get involved in though, and you'll make friends for life.

Good luck, and be prepared to save most of your student loan for the six nations ;)

My brother went to Glanmorgan before the merger. He said there were about 7 rugby teams of varying levels, and a huge amount of people try-out, hundreds in fact. The top few of teams take things quite seriously, so it's quite involving, with lots of training sessions etc. But if you want to do it more casually, the lower sides is more about having some fun.

I know my brother couldn't end up playing, as his course was very busy and involving, and they didn't get Thursday afternoons off unlike most other courses, so he couldn't attend training.

Yeah, towards the end of my time at uni (Aber), Glamorgan was becoming more known for it's sports(/rugby) and were having developments/improvements on their grounds and high performance gyms and the such built.

Yer after a 5 hour long trip down it seemed very good and I understand Cardiff blues sometimes train there I also found out UOSW also sponsors Sam warburton. And the one my course is based at is the treforest campus at Pontypridd or summit haha

Yeah, my brother was in treforest. After your first year in halls, there's a lot of very cheap houses available for rent which is good.

What course are you doing?

Both UWIC and Glamorgan have a tonne of teams from what I've heard. A few lads I used to play with went to them and both said the try outs involved hundreds turning up and even some of the better players still only just about made the 3rd XV team.

We spoke to the guy and he explained there's a 1st,2nd and 3rds team tryouts for like the 2nd and 3rd years but for me there's a freshers team full of 1st years so think it should be ok

Oh, I did a BSc at UoG as well. Don't worry about fitness training, you'll understand when you see the layout of the campus ;)

Yer haha on a massive hill up to the student accommodation. Someone was saying it's so if ur late for a lesson u can just role down the bank although can see it being much fun with a couple of drinks in you hah

Glam Uni have the facilities and granted their First XV is strong and are now managing to compete with some of the tougher teams. What lies beneath however does not matchup. They are linked with the Blues and Sam Hobbs does coach the Second XV.

The rugby of course is all dependant how good you are yourself. If you feel the uni rugby is not what you are looking for then there are plenty of clubs round that area that you could join.

I am a graduate of the University of Glamorgan, now known as South Wales. I played for the Uni and hated it. I graduated two years ago so things may have changed, but when I was there, there were three teams with tryouts at the start. It's true that there are well over hundred, maybe two hundred, guys that tryout, with the trials lasting a week or two. They select the three sides from that, so lots of guys don't make the cut - and to be honest lots of bad players get through and lots of good ones get cut.

I personally didn't do trials in first year (because I wanted a break) and only a part of the trials in second year (I was travelling) so I can't tell you what to expect with that. Firstly it is really expensive to play for them, over £100 for fees. You do get the full playing kit (shorts, socks and top) and warm up and social shirt but it is wild expensive, especially for students. Training is on a Monday night down at the Uni sports grounds, which are really well equipped - but expensive to use by yourself - and games are on a Wednesday with a 2.30 kick off.

My first game, at the end of first year after my break, was for the thirds. The first impression I got was that by mid season, between injuries, drop outs and being lazy, the teams struggle early on. And of course all the players that are cut at the start of the year refuse to come back and play, I was asked by a class mate to play so I wasn't one of the alienated guys, which there are many. The third level is pretty awful, I got man of the match after most of the season off, and picked up a man of the match award in the last game of the season with the 2nds - which is better.

In second year, I did some of the trials and got placed in the seconds. Which I had no problem with, as I was planning on pushing my way on up. But I quickly realised that this was never going to happen. The uni teams are so clicky you wouldn't believe. If you don't play with certain clubs in the valleys, who the coaches also coach, and don't fall in with the right boys in the teams, then you will never move up, or down. I just stopped training and stopped showing up for matches after the half way point of the season and I was still getting called on a Wednesday to play. Never a chance of moving up or getting dropped down. The captains as well are picked by the players which are more popularity contests rather than genuine leadership skills, our captain was useless, but he was one of the boys and popular, though he couldn't pass off his left. Also he decided where he played, which I promise you was not No.8 but he got called up to the firsts because, like I said, he was in that click.

The rugby itself is really fast and for the best part clean. Referees are decent and there are regular games. But for me I played the worst rugby of my 'career' with the uni. I ended up just playing for clubs in the local area which are much fun, cheaper and overall better. In third year I played for Bargoed which I really enjoyed. There are millions of clubs around that area, such as Bargoed, Beddau and so on that all play to a high level.

That's all I can remember for now, but will post other stuff if I remember. Any other questions just ask.

Yer when me and my dad went and asked about the trials the guy explained that there's 3 teams plus a freshers team for 1st years only to get warmed to the rugby and to give them a chance to get into it. Hmmm and the "special" treatment for certain people isn't new within the rugby scene. I'm from north east England and I play within Durham county we sent 5 lads to trails (minus me because of a falling out with the coach over me apparently being to small) and only one got in because his brother plays for London Irish the rest of thelads attended normal schools and had nowt going in the family. But anyway the guy said then after the first year it's split into the usual 3 teams depending upon your ability. Oh and i also see what u mean by the expensive cost of the clothing as I got a handout with all the stuff on. My mam was also saying ill be spending a fortune on the washing machines to wash my rugby gear on top of my normal clothes and it's like £2.50 for a wash ;O

I'm no stranger to rugby politics, but what I experienced at Uni Glam was by far the worst. Wales in general is bad for it - I hear horror stories at times, even about regional level - but the uni was awful for it. But this is my subjected opinion of it, perhaps you will have a better time.

I guess it depends what your after. If you wanna make friends, you'll make friends in your halls. If you wanna make rugby friends, then play for the uni team. And if you just wanna play rugby, then perhaps just join a club. Either way the main thing in Uni Glam is Score, which happens on a Wednesday night, every other night is Cardiff, which you don't have to be a member of any society to enjoy and make friends with the sports boys and girls.
I would recommend thinking about club rugby, they really look after you and there is a lot of good boys up there, but there is as well at the uni. During the trial matches there is also club reps that come from around the local area. They'll give out cards and invite anyone and if they like you from the trial match they'll come and talk to you personally. Some may offer a few pounds for coming and playing for them.

There are lots of clubs around the uni you could play for if your interested. What position do you play and at what level?

Also, the Uni 1st team played in the top league of the British university league before this year, they took really heavy losses on their way to being relegated. UWIC play in the WRU Championship, so that would be a higher level.

I can play anywhere from hooker to flanker to winger on the off occasion and I'm currently playing at colts (or under 18s) rugby and occasionally playing for senior teams when we havnt got a game

Hi, I have a question.
The University of Wales is getting larger by mergers. Is the University of South Wales going to join the University of Wales?
And I think that the University of Wales should add "National" to its name -- National University of Wales. (Could anyone translate "National University of Wales" into Welsh?)
