Hi!
As part of my training as a translator, I'm translating a chapter of Rugby in Munster and I was wondering if you could help me understand a quote.
This chapter is about professionalism, and the author quotes Edmund Van Esbeck : "There is every reason now to be apprehensive about the fallout from the game in this country. I stated before that once professionalism came in the window morality and loyalty will rapidly go out the door. The issues were never just about paying the international squad, or compensating them for time lost at work and for the time and effort they spent preparing for matches. An awareness of the true nature of the game in this country and the premise on which it is based made it obvious that Ireland could not sustain professionalism."
I'm not quite sure I understand the first sentence: is he talking about the consequences of professionalism on the Irish rugby or its consequences on the whole country?
Thank you in advance for your help!
Diane
