How come League have a state of Origin but Union doesn't, it would make for an interesting lineup.

They could do something of the sort in New Zealand, North vs. South.

This year North would wreck South, having the Hurricanes and Chiefs.

It wouldn't be that hard to start a competition like State of Origin for Union, at first you would just need the ARU to agree to it, to do that you just need a few players on side for it.
Then it's the simple matter of getting sponsors for it, and working out selection rules.

It doesn't make sense having an SoO when the two states involved only have one team. It wouldn't be of a very high quality and I doubt it would inspire the public. It would be a poor comparison to rugby league's SoO which is rugby league's biggest event. North vs South wouldn't work in NZ either. You could have it as a trial but trials are basically just a waste of time. There simply isn't any island rivalry over here.

Besides everyone knows the main island (South) would win in a David v Goliath battle.

The difference between Union and League in Australia is that Union has a wider presence. League is played in Qld and NSW only. Union has started successfully expanding to WA and is very big in the ACT, what do you suggest the players from those states/territories do? Union also only has one club in each state, but the NRL has 14.

Don't forget that players from Queensland, and NSW's are spread into each team in Australia, hell you could even have the four main Rugby Union states play against each other.

Don't they already do that each year as a minor sort of competition? After the S14 some time??

Yeah they used to have some kind of shield, I think the funding got pulled though.
