A win is a win and boy oh boy did Wales need that. Samoa came with the intention to disrupt the Welsh party and did it. Infact I'd go as far to say they crashed it. Samoa gave Wales one hell of a game today and that can only be good for Samoan rugby. Whether they were unlucky not to win it ... I'm not so sure. Wales were dire in a lot of areas today but good in some. Wales were successful when they took the ball up the middle, when they did they gained ground and when they didn't ... they either lost the ball or conceded the penalty. Halfpenny at full back was a revelation today. Hopefully this is the way Gatland will go in the rest of the RWC. Halfpenny was up with play and offered a real threat in attack and his defence was good also. It was also good to see Gethin Jenkins back today. Really made an impact when he came on, making a few turnovers and building on the success of Paul James in the scrum. Notable mention must go to Huw Bennett who put his body on the line today and showed that he has some talent. Granted he got himself isolated a few times he was pretty good elsewhere. Roberts was also effective in both attack and defence. Where the negatives lay with Wales ... allowing counter rucking both legally and illegally from Samoa. Wales ruck formation was dire and Wales often invited Samoa for the steal. Kicking ... dear god it was dire at times ... often aimless and pointless. Wales lack a World Class goal kicker ... Preistland and Hook are neither this. Both need to improve kicking from the floor and hand ... urgently. Also Wales game plan was dire. Often shifting from side to side and as I said as soon as they went direct, Wales gained yards and territory. Wales blew a few chances today notably the Charteris to Roberts pass ... I believe Roberts would have beaten Tuilagi on the drift. Player wise ... Andy Powell ... boy can't really tackle, can't hold onto the ball and neither can he win ball for Wales on the floor. Andy do us a favour and just sod off, you offer nothing but comical value to Wales. Jonathan Davies showed he is not international standard ... another try he almost botched for Wales ... and this is not his first. His distribution and kicking is weak and at times is a liability in defence, Warren a Hook-Roberts combo in center field would do nicely. As for Rolland ... ... he was dire and dire both ways. He got the double movement correct, sadly for Samoa the player did try and get up instead of placing the ball. He missed a few offsides for both teams and I thought his handling of the scrum was dire. All in all. Rolland was poor for both sides. Samoa as I said can take heart. Definitely came to play. Just not clinical not enough.
