SA Rugby boss warns unions over 'too white' teams

South Africa is hopeless.

Note: I cannot copy and paste from the website. Sorry.
Well, there is a transformation regulations with which the unions need to comply with, so it's not something the Unions don't know about.

And the recent Chasing the Sun series of the Springboks winning the world cup, gives you a perspective from Rassie Erasmus, the current director of Rugby's stance on this matter.

Teams should comply with the transformation clauses, simple as that. And SARU has a right to reprimand them if they don't conform to those regulations.

I do however think that the coaching issue is a bit of a grey -"ish" area, as there isn't really many black coaches in SA that can take on a roll of head coach. Apart from Allister Coetzee and PDV, the new batch of black coaches prefer to take on a role as assistant coach, and to learn a bit more from the head coaches. Mzwandile Stick is a prime example of this.

It's true @TRF_heineken there are transformation regulations. It's nothing new. They apply to everyone and if unions don't comply then the respective structures start making quarterly threats to the unions. The unions know about this and they must comply under the current regulations or risk expulsion or fines.

If I was the CEO of a union I would comply, as it would be detrimental to my union for defying these orders. They can't be the social justice warriors. It's not the unions place to fight it. Rather It's the public's rejection of racist concepts that should filter through parliament in the long run to avoid such legislation even being passed.

Race based Transformation at an elite sporting level is and will always be a racist concept and cannot be normalised just because we deal with this on a daily basis.

If a genocidal dictator stays in power for long enough it does not give him or her legitimacy. There is due process that needs to be followed such as democratic ideals in a free society.

If race based Transformation becomes accepted because it has become the norm then that is tantamount to a public just accepting a dictator because he stays in power for a long time therefore the democratic ideals become irrelevant and authoritarianism reigns supreme. If we accept race based Transformation at the top level as a compromise then our values change, this becomes a moral question.

Should governments have hard rules to force their sport teams to always reflect their demographics in a proportional representation system?

Should France put a 85% white quota in their football team because it's not representative of their demographics? No Absolutely not in my opinion.

It's a moral issue in support of non-racialism. If you support top level race based Transformation because of rapidly changed public sentiment and media pusing the same ideals for their own benefit then you have been influenced by government public sentiment campaigns.

If the ANC were fair in any way shape or form, they would give equal opportunity to all. Affirmative action/transformation is nothing but getting back/revenge at the old system.

What I meant was, is what Rassie said in the Chasing the Sun interview. In that there should be more openness towards transformation, and it must not be shyed away from conversation.

Maybe the unions have legitimate reasons why their teams are not conforming to the transformation regulations for the under/21's. Could be that most of their ethnic black players went home during lockdown, and they didn't return in time to be eligible to play the tournament. Maybe the players themselves didn't want to run the risk of getting infected?

I just think that most of the unions, especially the big 7 have gone at great lengths to conform to the transformation regulations, without having it interfere too much on the quality of players they have.

I just think that they should seperate the issue of teams, not having enough black players, to one side, and have the issue of black coaches on a seperate discussion.

I know that it's all about BEE, and quotas, blah blah, but I have come to the opinion that under Rassie, there will definitely be some sort of drive towards improving transformation on all fronts. But I think it will take a little bit more time. The only guy I can think of that can be a head coach of a Super Rugby team is Deon Davids. And he would have been part of this tournament had the Kings not been disbanded.
