Premier Rugby has agreed with Sale Sharks and Newcastle Falcons to postpone their Guinness Premiership round 13 matches scheduled to take place this weekend.
The Sale Sharks match had already been moved from its original Friday evening slot to increase the chances of the game being played.

Despite the availability of pitch covers and heaters, existing weather conditions in the North East and North West, coupled with the forecast of more snow and continuing low temperatures, mean both stadia concourses and surrounding areas will be too dangerous for spectators to allow the matches to take place.

The Carling Cup match between Manchester City and Manchester United was postponed yesterday for similar reasons.

Phil Winstanley, Rugby Director at PRL said, "All parties have reluctantly agreed that under the circumstances and looking at the weather forecast, postponing the matches now is the best option for supporters, players and administrators.

"Snow and ice around Kingston Park and Edgeley Park make it potentially too dangerous for spectators and presents significant concerns for access for the emergency services. Under the expected conditions, it is likely that the matches would not gain safety certificates.

"We have all agreed that an early postponement is the best solution and we will now throw our resources behind the other four Guinness Premiership matches this weekend and hope that we can beat the weather! We will now work with all Clubs to identify an appropriate date for the rearranged fixture"

Global "warming", eh?

Though crap for anyone with a ticket, it gives (Sale at least) a better chance of winning, as with the next HEC game next weekend, we'd've probably rested a lot of key players' and end up getting battered like at leicester

The main problem will be burnout so far as Sale are concerned; They have a small squad, an already congested fixture list and will now need to play 2 midweek fixtures.

If any more games are called off, I think it'll be a miserable end to the season in Stockport.

Premier Rugby has agreed with Bath Rugby and Northampton Saints that their round 13 Guinness Premiership match will also be postponed.
This is in addition to the Sale Sharks versus Saracens and Newcastle Falcons versus Gloucester Rugby matches that were postponed this morning.

Phil Winstanley, Rugby Director at PRL said, "As with the other matches postponed today, we have real concerns about the safety of the spectator areas at The Recreation Ground in addition to concerns about access for the emergency services. Player and spectator welfare is always of paramount concern for us and under the circumstances, we reluctantly felt that an early postponement was the best option.

"Our specialist contractors, Sports and Stadia Services have reviewed the weather forecast over the next few days which is for very low temperatures with the threat of further snow. Having considered the conditions at The Rec they also believe that clearing the surrounding areas and disposing of the cleared snow is almost impossible.

"We will now work with both Clubs to identify an appropriate date for the rearranged fixture"

Silly listening to talk sport, all they are talking about is matches cancelled. I mean if people are hurt in and around games, amount of people looking to sue would be crazy.

i think its fair enough to cancel the matches. Im just fed up of whinging about it all the time.

Who would they sue? It's not the clubs fault there would be ice on the surrounding roads. It wouldn't be the local authority fault the people slipped on ice.

The world is going to hell...

Is the Leicester game still going to be shown on Sky?[/b]
TVguide.co.uk say it is (and it has the kickoff down at the new time as well so it's been updated recently)

Better news in Worcester and Leicester

Worcester Warriors will move kick-off of their match against London Irish to 2.00pm as both they and Leicester Tigers remain confident of their matches going ahead on Saturday.
Warriors have worked closely with the local authority and a private company to grit the stadium complex and make all access roads and footpaths safe for supporters. Ground staff worked through heavy snow and difficult conditions throughout Tuesday and Wednesday to take covers off, clear snow and get the pitch protection dome up to protect the pitch. Hot air has been blowing onto the pitch for 48 hours and has left the pitch in great condition for the weekend. Kick off has been moved to 2.00pm in order to allow the public to vacate Sixways in daylight after the game and before the night time freeze begins in earnest. Tickets remain for the match, with supporters being asked to call the ticket office on 01905 454 183.

At Welford Road Leicester Tigers play London Wasps in the live Sky match. The match has already been moved from its original kick-off time of 5.30pm to 3.15pm to give the match a better chance of taking place.

Tigers ground staff have been working tirelessly to keep the stadium free of snow. A protective dome has been put up over the Welford Road pitch and warm air has been blown into this for most of the week.

Tigers' commercial partners came together to support the cause, with main sponsor Caterpillar supplying a telehandler to help remove more than 20 tonnes of snow from the pitch on Wednesday. Midland Rock and Bardon Aggregates also provided a truck to transport the snow to Saffron Lane Sports Centre where Leicester City Council has kindly allowed the club to deposit the snow in a corner of their car park.

For matchday, the club has arranged a workforce to be available to clear the stands and terraces ahead of the match and the City Council will be clearing the approaches and highways as Tigers defend their proud record of having lost only one home game to the weather in the last 10 years. Despite the cold weather, the game is approaching a 24,000 sell-out with limited tickets still available from the Tigers ticket office. Supporters can phone 0844 856 1880, book online or call in at Welford Road.

Phil Winstanley, Rugby Director at Premier Rugby added, "It was unfortunate to lose the Harlequins match earlier today, but having spoken to Leicester Tigers and Worcester Warriors, I have my fingers crossed that their matches will go ahead. Both clubs have worked exceptionally hard to improve the conditions at their grounds and they, their sponsors, their respective local authorities and the many volunteers who have helped them should be congratulated for the time and effort they have put in.

"With so little sport likely to take place this weekend, I hope that they will be rewarded with good matches and big crowds."
