Paul Sculthorpe is to leave St Helens at the end of the season after the Super League leaders confirmed they would not be offering him a new deal.

His injury record and the restraints of the salary cap are thought to be behind the decision for Saints to release the club captain and two-time Man of Steel.

It is thought he may join Salford next season to be reunited with Shaun McRae.

McRae was the coach who signed the teenage Sculthorpe for Saints from Warrington as a teenager in 1997.

A spokesperson for the Reds, who have been given one of the 14 Super League licences for the next three seasons, confirmed the club had been approached by Sculthorpe's agent but insisted that no deal had yet been signed.

Another possible location for the 30-year-old, who is currently in his testimonial year, could be Wakefield, where his brother Danny plays.

Sculthorpe was appointed Saints captain in 2004, winning the Challenge Cup in 2004 and 2006 and the Super League Grand Final in 1999, 2000 and 2002.

But he has been plagued by a string of injuries in the last two years - including a knee reconstruction - and has managed only a handful of games this season. "We have been talking to Paul since June and have allowed him to speak to other clubs," confirmed a Saints spokesman.

Since joining from his hometown Warrington club for a then world-record fee of £370,000, he has made more than 200 appearances for Saints, scoring 1116 points in the process.

He succeeded Andy Farrell as Great Britain captain back in 2005, but was forced to stand down from the role after playing just 18 minutes of Test rugby, again because of injuries.

Sculthorpe, the only player to ever win back-to-back Man of Steel awards, is back in contention for Saints' game against Harlequins after overcoming a hamstring injury.

Dan, do you wish to comment??

I'm devastated, but we just can't continue to pay him when he doesn't play. The man is a St Helens legend, he has been here for ten years and won the lot, has been a class act on and off the field and if he was Australian would have been recognised for what he was in 2000 - 2002, the best player on the planet.

I wish he would just acknowledge that time is time and retire. I'd love him on our coaching staff. Whatever he chooses to do good luck to him but he has won everything he can at Saints, he isn't going to do it anywhere else. Just jack it in Scully and enjoy the rest of your life, a comfortable media career and enjoy the fact you are one of the greatest players in the Super League era.

Paul Sculthorpe - legend.
