Have you ever seen a full stand-up show of his?

I'm happy to answer in the negative

So how would you know, or are you just saying what you think you have to in order to avoid being branded racist?

I've not actually ever seen any kiddie-porn...is it okay if I find that distasteful?

I've seen & read plenty of Manning's work, I've heard people talking about what a good stand-up he was.

I just don't think racist & anti-minority jokes are anything to write home about. If he was a good stand-up but still chose to tell that sort of jokes it just makes it worse.

The way he's being held up as some sort of straight-talking champion of the pc-oppressed masses is pathetic.

Y'see, Wigan RFLC, this is precisely why the country is in the state it's in. Bernard Manning was fabulously funny. Here's a couple of quotes from his own obituary he wrote before he died, courtesy of The Daily Mail:

...."in their obsession with turning comedy into a branch of Left-wing politics, they forgot that the only point of jokes is to make people laugh. And that was what I was good at, whether I was on the cabaret circuit in Manchester or at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas......"

...."What they never understood was that I was an equal opportunites comedian. Unlike them, with their little checklists and taboos, and easy targets. I never discriminated against anyone or anything. I was quite happy to get a laugh out of any situation. All that mattered to me was whether the gag was funny or not.
'I had a distant German relative who died at Auschwitz. He fell out of one of the watchtowers'. Now that's humour, precisely because it's close to the edge, unlike so many of the tired, comfortable, right-on lines about George Bush in which modern comics indulge, massaging the consciences of their middle-class audiences instead of giving them raw entertainment.
Oh I can see the other obituaries already: 'Bernard Manning, racist bigot', the smug types will say when they hear of my departure. But that's not what the great British public, especially in Lancashire and the rest of the North, will say. They knew that I was a funny bloke. That's why they kept flocking back to my own cabaret club, even when I was barred from the airwaves.
And I was never a racist. That's just an easy, catch-all term of abuse bandied around by the media elite against anyone who does not follow their agenda. It was just meaningless.
When told by some toffee-nosed southerner that I was prejudiced, I used to say; 'Have you actually seen my act?' they would then admit they hadn't. 'Then you don't know what you are talking about. You're the one who is prejudiced because you are pre-judging me'.

Racist? Rubbish, Did these self-righteous critics know that Clive Lloyd, the great West Indian cricket captain, asked me to perform as part of his testimonial? Or that I did a fund raising event for the Lancashire and India wicket keeper Farokh Engineer and another for the great black boxing champion, John Conteh? For goodness sake, I was multi-racial myself, a descendant of Jewish immigrants from Sevastopol. Thourhgout my life, a sign with the Jewish greeting 'Shalom' hung by the door of my home in North Manchester......"

I'd take one of Bernard Manning for fifty of these modern tossers any day of the week. And here's another thing: almost 60% of the country (England - representing 85% of the UK) agree with me i.e. the majority, the ones who can't be bothered voting anymore, us workers with families.

'Royal Blue Stuey', eh? Far from making me laugh, his ilk make me want to weep.......

Yeah I'm PC gone mad me...and all those pakis, coons and queers just want to get a sense of humour.

Even if he was talented that fact that he cynically persisted with the bigotted side of his act in order to get cheap laughs at the expense of minorites and give closet racists a cheap thrill just makes it worse.

If you'd have sen one of his shows you'd have known that his act wasn't soley based around 'racist' jokes. He took the mick out of politicians, public figures, other comedians, members of the audience etc. Yet the media try to portray him as someone who just went on stage to spread hatered against Blacks, Pakistanis, Homosexuals, Irish etc. Which wasn't the case. I can't think of many jokes even today with the lefty right-on comedy that started in the 80's that nobody at all would be offended by.

You're the only poster on here so far that has mentioned the terms 'pakis, coons and queers' . You are racist, without a doubt - problem is that the target of your racism happens to be the indigenous people of this country.

Yes, that really does make sense. Was that pile of nonsense really worth looking up from your Daily Mail for?

By indigenous what do you mean? You see I really resent those Celts/Romans/Saxons/Normans coming over taking our jobs etc etc etc

If I'm honest I regret calling you an idiot for your original post however the facts remain, he was famous for his olde stylee humour and didn't do anything to change that....he milked the non-PC routine for all it was worth.

Successful as he was he did taking the **** out of minorities, he specialised in a horrible boorish kind of humour...for that reason alone I think the eulogising of him is wrong.

enjoy ;) :

You are a douche bag. "Indigenous people of this country." Now that's comedy.

I wondered when you'd pop out of your box, in full-on Clown's outfit, bouncing on your spring. Bernard Manning was somebody you have no knowledge of, despite any frantic searches on Google or whatever, so if we want an opinion off you about this very local topic, we'll ask. Douche bag? Good one.

That's quite presumptious of you, now isn't it? No, I've never seen the man live, but it does not mean that I have no knowledge of him up until this conversation. But hey, I'm American and I don't understand your sophisticated English humo(u)r...what's irony, really? I'll just stick to my Larry the Cableguy and "Get er done."
By the way, I look sexy in a clown suit...just ask your mum.

It would appear, then, that my presumption is correct. Irony was never Bernard Manning's strong point, and there was nothing sophisticated about his humour whatsoever - which is precisely the point you have missed by a long shot.

Give it up, you can't know everything, try as you may to sound as if you do. You wouldn't have known my mother: She was Irish. You ain't (ry as you may to sound as if you are...)

That gag is classic - Woody Allen would nick it, if it weren't for the subject matter.

But do you not enjoy the Bush-basher Jon Stewart? Or Steven Colbert's satire?

On irony - watch a single episode of Friends and tell me the Americans don't get irony: the entire show turns on it. And look at Ed Byrne in a clip posted above on Alanis Morrisset's complete lack of understanding of the theme of her song Ironic - the English and Americans should stop bashing each other, and turn on the Canadians.
