http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/rugby_union/6936464.stm England winger David Strettle's World Cup chances look slim after he broke a bone in his foot in training. The injury to the fifth metatarsal in his left foot happened while he was running in training on Tuesday and there was no-one else in involved. He will see a specialist on Wednesday night and England boss Brian Ashton will not make a decision on his future until he has seen the doctor's report. "I'm obviously sorry to hear about his injury," said Ashton. "I wish him a speedy recovery. I won't decide about a possible replacement until I receive a briefing of the consultation on Thursday." The 24-year-old Harlequins player, who has three caps, has made a big impression since coming into the England team for the Six Nations game against Ireland, after Jason Robinson suffered a neck injury in training. But he has also endured some bad luck, missing both England's Tests against South Africa after being hospitalised with a stomach virus which forced him home from the tour. It now looks like he may also be denied the chance to play in the World Cup as well. England footballers David Beckham and Wayne Rooney both endured seven-week absences when they suffered similar injuries before the 2002 European Championships and 2006 World Cup respectively. If Strettle needed a similar lay-off, he would miss all England's group stage games. Ashton has already ruled uncapped Bristol number eight Dan Ward-Smith out of his World Cup plans after he failed to recover in time from a knee injury. Centre Mike Tindall (leg) also looks set to miss the tournament while Mark Cueto (groin), Tom Rees (hamstring) and Peter Richards (back) are currently battling injuries.
