The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will host the Chicago Bears at Wembley on 23 October, should the 2011 NFL season go ahead.

Wahey! I've always had a bit of a soft spot for Tampa Bay so I may think about getting a ticket for this. :)

Well you might want to hold on to your cash first because they have not decided in the NFL season will go ahead.

Yeah what is going on with the League? As I understand the owners and players can't come to an agreement over pay but does that mean the NFL will be disbanded? Because in the article it says if an agreement is not met the game will instead be played at the Raymond James Stadium which implies the game will go ahead in one capacity..?

Short story is that the players feel they deserve more money, its not like they are getting more money. The NFL are giving franchise something like an 80% of all NFL income but players think they deserve the full 100%.

The league won't get disbanded but what will happen is that they will fill the teams with players who are not good enough but want to play. Where they get these players will be interesting also. So instead of Tom Brady being the QB of the Patriots could well see Joe Bloggs as the QB.

The game will be played as you mentioned but where is determined by if the NFL and the players agree a deal. If they do its Wembley, if they don't its Raymond James Stadium.

In reality the players need to sit down and man up. They get paid loads enough.

That is ridiculous. Makes me so angry when top level players get so worked up about the amount of money they get paid. Whatever happened to the amateur ethos of sport and playing your sport for the enjoyment of playing!? The NFL should just tell them to do one if the players and owners refuse to come to an agreement - if there are lower order players who are happy to play then so be it.

Does this mean the draft will still happen in a few weeks? And if it does, if an agreement isn't already reached won't it just mean the draft means nothing as the players can't sign for a team without an agreement between the players, league and owners in place?

Correct. The draft will occur, players will be drafted but cannot sign a contract to an NFL franchise. Their rights will be with the franchise.

This won't happen, if the NFL and NFLPA don't come to a agreement the NFL will lockout the season and no games will be played by the NFL. The NHL lockout in 2004-05 was preety much identical to this and that lasted 310 days before it was resolved so this could go the same way if the NFLPA don't step down. The only difference between the NFL and NHL lockout is that the NHL players had other leagues to go to when the League locked out the season, for the NFL that is much harder due to the sheer lack of alt leagues. They do have the CFL but i doubt there teams will shell out millions to sign a player that may only play a few games depending on how long the dispute lasts.

Ah but you might find it will. It was mentioned on NFL Total Access and NFL Websire a few weeks ago. It is a real possibility.

Either that or the Euro league is about to get a massive shot in the arm!

Rugby's doomed! DOOOOOOOOOOOOMED!

Some guys in the States are thinking that this could be a vey good opportunity for rugby. If the NFL starts late/doesn't start, some tv channels might be intersted in broadcasting the RWC instead and tapping the huge market of contact sports for cheap (cheaper than NFL anyway)...

Good chance. They will need something to fill in in case the league does not go ahead / does with the crap players etc.

For those who watch or know who Chad Ochocinco has just finished a trial stint with MLS side Sporting Kansas City as a way of occupying himself during the lockout.

Its not worth the hassle for the owners. The majority of players are with the NFLPA, so if they find replacements for all of them and sign them to short terms contracts and then the lockout ends they will have alot of unwanted contracts on there hands and will have to pay out millions in order to release them. It would be better for them and the league to just lockout the season until it is resolved.

to any americans on the forum
are their anyother pro or semi pro american football leagues??

United Football League, Canadian Football League and several Arena Leagues. All of which are classed as Professional Leagues with the Canadian Football League having more history than even the NFL.

Slightly off topic, but is there amateur American Football?
I mean, outside of highschool/college/"peewee football", but like we have with rugby our towns will have their own club, is there anything like that with American Football, or is it purely a pro game for adults?

I know of the NAFL (North American Football League) and NEFL (New England Football League) from friends in the U.S but not sure how far it spreads. NAFL is a national league with a National Championship and the NEFL is only based in New England states. I can imagine there is many smaller leagues across the "Football" states.

Yes but the contracts they would sign would be for the duration of the lockout ;) again this was all mentioned on NFL Total Access with Rich Eisen and the gang.

They have no idea how long the lockout will last and players won't sign anything unless there is guaranteed money on the table. So if the owners give players guaranteed money contracts and a week later the lockout ends that would put them in another bad position. Just because NFL Total Access say something doesn't mean its set in stone, at the end of the day its up to Roger Goodell and the NFLPA at what happens.

No but remember the NFL fund the show and Rich Eisen, Lombardi, Dukes etc are all pretty clued up to be honest. You can be negative and disagree with me all you want but at the end of the day thats one of the plans that the NFL has as an option.
