The Stormers Thread

So on that note of lineout operator, we’ve made a lock signing. Hendre Stassen. Bit of an interesting one. Coming off a 4 year doping ban, but was a junior bok and at 25 still has quite a bit of playing time in him. Previously Bulls and then Stade Francais. Pretty similar frame to Moerat at 2m and 120kg.
Saw that just now. Certainly helpful but we could do with more significant signings in the tight 5. I'm happy enough elsewhere apart from at 13 perhaps.

We are really not looking great for next season in the forwards. Only acquisitions have been former players (Kitshoff and Schickerling) and now we’ve just lost Evan Roos to injury/operation for the next six months. Reading on Rugby365 that Dobson sent Roos an expletive laden voice note on finding out has me thinking he was clearly blindsided. We just shipped out some of our backup and starting loose forwards (Dayimani, Pokomela, Xaba) and could’ve possibly snapped up Notshe again if we were aware we would be down another loose forward.

Deon Fourie is out until October too. All of a sudden we’ve become super light in the loose forward department, the one area where South Africa (and the Stormers) usually has a ton of depth.

Thankfully if players recover from injury I think we are looking pretty solid in our backline, with a bit of flexibility… trying to think about what our starting line up may look like but this may be one of the first times as a Stormers supporter where our backline appears stronger than our forwards.

Kitshoff
Dweba (Hugo-Venter)
Malherbe
Moerat
Schickerling
Jason-Dickson
Engelbrecht (Fourie)
Morabe (I honestly don’t know who we throw at 8 given Roos is out)

De Wet (Jantjies)
Libbok (SFM)
Hartzenberg
Willemse (du Plessis)
Nel (Simelane)
Zas (Loader/Davids)
SFM (Gelant/Blommetjies)

There is a lot of versatility and players able to cover other positions in the backline. Things looks really thin in the forwards. Props drop quite a level when you go to the bench, same with locks (and even starting on locks isn’t the most stellar). Loose forward is a critical issue for us.

Not great news for us. SFM out until EoYT with knee op, meaning he will miss our first 5 games of the season. Those being:
Ospreys (A), Zebre (A), Edinburgh (A), Munster (H), Glasgow (H)
3/5 from those won't be too bad, but I'm relying on us getting those first two as wins away from home, where we have been quite poor historically. In general the team's performance in the Currie Cup doesn't have me wildly optimistic for the season.

Getting excited for the new URC season though I think we will be fighting it out for the #5 spot at best. I believe we are the 4th best team perhaps just a hair's width ahead of Glasgow but Glasgow have a much easier ride. Leinster clearly the top side (still) with Bulls 2nd and Sharks 3rd (on paper at least- coaching ad player commitment to the URC specifically is still an issue for them IMO).

Stormers A team I feel can beat anyone on the day BUT we don't have the depth to realistically compete when the inevitable injuries strike unless we fluke a very low injury season like the one we got the title again.

Forwards: Adre Smith, Alex Groves, Ali Vermaak, Andre-Hugo Venter, Ben-Jason Dixon, Connor Evans, Corne Weilbach, Deon Fourie, Divan Fuller, Evan Roos, Frans Malherbe, Gary Porter, JD Schickerling, JJ Kotze, Keke Morabe, Leon Lyons, Louw Nel, Lukhanyo Vokozela, Marcel Theunissen, Neethling Fouche, Ntuthuko Mchunu, Paul de Villiers, Riley Norton, Ruben van Heerden, Ruan Ackermann, Salmaan Moerat, Sazi Sandi, Scarra Ntubeni, Sti Sithole, Vernon Matongo, Zachary Porthen.

Backs: Asad Moos, Cobus Reinach, Courtnall Skosan, Damian Markus, Damian Willemse, Dan du Plessis, Dewaldt Duvenage, Imad Khan, JC Mars, Jared Africa, Jean-Luc du Plessis, Jonathan
Roche, Jurie Mathee, Kyle Smith, Leolin Zas, Luke Burger, Ruhan Nel, Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu, Sako Makata, Seabelo Senatla, Stefan Ungerer, Suleiman Hartzenberg, Wandisile Simelane, Warrick Gelant.

Considering the amount of movement the Bulls and Sharks saw both last "transfer window" and this one we see Stormers are still happy to keep it in the get into the qualifiers probably at the 5/6 mark and lets have a go but we are certainly going to be either running on fumes or not going to have a crack at the Euro Championship range of things.

I expect our first choice side to look like:

1 Mchunu, 2 AH Venter, 3 Fouche
16 JJ Kotze, 17 Vermaak, 18 Malherbe

4 Moerat, 5 Van Heerden
19 Shickerling

6 Fourie (c?), 7 BJ Dixon, 8 Roos
20 Ackermann / Norton?

9 Reinach, 10 Feinberg-Mngomezulu
21 Duvenhage? (personally would like to see Khan get some time), 22 Mathee / JLDu Plessis?

12 Willemse, 13 Nel

11 Zas, 15 Gelant, 14 Hartzenberg
23 D Du Plessis / Simelane

Personally would've preferred to see a new 12 with Willemse playing at 15 for us. Libbok out does clear up the pecking order but we'll miss him ITO depth.

Yea, Currie Cup has just shown how dire things will be if we hit a bad injury patch.

On your team. I think De Villiers will be in the place of Fourie a lot in the season with player management in age. Getting Kebble in adds a bit more depth in terms of props, but can't help feel we've been robbed with injuries to Kitshoff and Malherbe in the last two years. (Think you are missing Kebble in your list btw, was a recent swap with the Bulls). I'm feeling a lot less confident than you though. In theory I think we have a strong starting 15 that could compete for top 5. In reality our depth is paper thin, and we will likely be fighting for 8th.
