Four nominees unveiled:

http://www.irbsevens.com/news/newsid=2064511.html

Hosea Gear (New Zealand) vs Ireland
Julian Savea (New Zealand) vs Scotland
Bryan Habana (South Africa) vs New Zealand
Julien Malzieu (France) vs Italy

All are pretty impressive. For me it's great to see both All Black "power wingers" nominated. I'd probably vote for Gear, but he's one of my favourite players, so I'm a bit biased ;) I didn't remember Malzieu's try, it's top class as well.

Your opinions? Favourites? Any fantastic try missed by the selectors maybe? (I think only international matches count)

With my biased hat on, Davies' try against Ireland in the 6 nations should be there imo. The way North set up that try was the single biggest power-play of the year (that I have seen).

Can't believe the Savea try made the cut. Nice cross kick and good sidestep to finish, but those kind of try's are seen all the time.

Hosea Gear's try against Ireland wins it for me. Pure power and pace.

Vs Ireland, Scotland and Italy?... seriously? It can only be Habana against NZ.

Gotta love Gear's try, if only for slowing down to smash Earls on his way in.

This is the most ridiculous Tier 1 biased nominations I have seen. There have been some great tries in Tier 2 rugby this year.

The fact they ignored Vladimir Ostroushko's try against Spain is ridiculous. This for me is one of the best individual tries I've seen.

For team tries, this try finished by Matías Macera against Romania was immense, it contained as many passes as the legendary Edwards try and has a great offload at the end. And yes I know Jaguars aren't an international side, but there was a try from the Argentina Jaguars nominated in previous years and Romania awarded caps for this match.

Another team try was by Spain against Georgia in the ENC.

This was also a good try from Fiji finished by Niki Goneva.

I also like the try Dullonien nominated and he's right that Savea vs Scotland shouldn't be there. This Argentina try was pretty good too.

Yeah I'm disappointed JD isn't in there, that try has everything. Solid set-piece, great line, power, pace, skill and excellent support play to finish it off.

Forgot how good that Aregntinian try vs the All Blacks was!
That would get my vote, actually.
Thought it was immense watching it at the time, still as good now.

My mate scored a cracker for the Seapoint seconds. Should that be included too?

Blah, tier 2 tries are mostly made less impressive by seeing so many players positioning themselves poorly and falling off tackles.

That Argentina try against NZ should be try of the year though...

Those are great tries you present, but it's rather easier to do it against Spain than against top 10 sides. Of course that doesn't apply to Landajo's try, which was scored against the most difficult opposition possible, and I agree it deserves a place among nominees, it's arguably better than Savea's try.

That Davies try is also awesome, could well be included as well. I thought about George Pisi's try against Wales maybe? Defender (not just any defender, Jamie Roberts) run over Lomu-style by Fotuali'i and then this acrobatic finish by Pisi.

Might deserve a nomination as well?

Why limit it to real matches?
I scored a beauty with Andrew "*******" Hore in JLRC.
Lineout to the front, Cowan sprints through the gap, takes on the fullback and offloads to Hore to put him in the corner.

Gear or the Messam try against Wales (that was quality).

SAVEA´s try vs Scotland is the best of the year for me (he´s a really good rugby player on attack and defense)

I knew this would bring out the Tier 2 snobs. Should we just limit this to tries against the All Blacks? These tries still deserve credit for what they are, Ostroushko's try was still immense, and don't tell me that Keith Earls and Stuart Hogg are exactly the bees knees of defending either. Credit needs to be given to Ostroushko. Also don't tell me there weren't players falling off tackles or positioning themselves poorly in Malzieu's vs Italy.

To compare these sides made up of majority players from fully professional leagues, to a local pub seconds team is disrespectful. Tier 2 isn't as weak as many people who just shut their heads off to it believe, USA for example nearly beat Tonga and should had they kicked better and been more clinical and not had a try disallowed to a forward pass, and then Tonga beat Scotland the next week. And USA aren't even near the top ranked Tier 2 team. Canada were the better, more creative team for much of their match against Italy in June, Italy only won thanks to absolutely obliterating the scrum, they only beat Tonga for the same reason, and Italy nearly drew to Australia. Tier 2 isn't like the low it was back in 2003.

Some Tier 2 teams get a bad rep thanks to teams like Namibia and a couple of others, and some times where teams sacrificing matches by playing reserve teams in World Cups to rest players in midweek (eg Aus vs USA, Eng vs Rom, Japan vs NZ etc), and not always getting their best players available for all matches (eg Fiji vs Ire/Eng). If you look at Tier 1 vs Tier 2 matches with proper teams fielding proper sides, you will competitive good matches such as Samoa vs anybody, Tonga vs Scotland and Italy, Canada and USA vs Italy, Japan vs Italy and in the World Cup Romania vs Scotland, Japan vs France etc

The Argentinean team try vs Romania was great, and there is a lot less weak defending in that try compared to Malzieu's try or Keith Earls in Gear's try. It was just great handling and teamwork, certainly should be a nominated try. And before anybody who missed my original post comments that it was Argentina Jaguars, they have had tries nominated for IRB try of the year in 2010, so it has happened before.

Spain are actually arguably the most improved side in the top 20, as they've started to find a whole load of French Top 14/Pro D2 professionals with Spanish ancestry and put them in their side. Of course they are not as good as the best in the world, but they are not a joke either.

We can argue all day about other tries that should be included.

I agrea that JD and Pumas try should be included.

But out of the 4, it is a real toss up between Habanna and Gear, IMO gear will take it.

I forgot about this try. An eye for the gap, superb handling and the Canadian backs (who have some of the best backs in Tier 2) at their best. Tier 1 teams Argentina, Scotland and Italy would bite your arm off for centres like Canada's. It's a shame that all of Trainor, van der Merwe and Mackenzie missed all or a large part of this November's tour.

Considering the quality of the opponent, Landajo's try to the All Blacks was one of the best of the year ...

Based on the NOMINATED tries, there's really only 2 which stands out. Habana and Hosea Gear's try.

Habana wins it for me, as I', a Saffa, and he scored it against the All Blacks, the best team in the world, with some of the fastest and best defenders in the world. that was individual brilliance at it's best.

Gear was a big guy handing off a bunch of small guys trying to tackle him wrongly. if you're smaller than your opponent, then you go low, if you want to tackle him from the side at shoulder height, then you will end on the floor with your face on the ground.

Earls' positioning for the tackle makes the try more extravagant than it should've been. Though it's always fun to see a pale guy get even more white when he gets shoved away...
