USA news & politics

Do you notice any difference in attitudes towards Trump between your Trump voting friends? Are some more forgiving of Jan 6th than others? Do some tolerate his crass behaviour more than others etc?
I have a friend group of about 10 guys. We have known each other for 20+ years.

They are teachers, doctors, software engineers, mechanics, military, and other professions. So from an economic standpoint, it's extremely diverse.

To a man, all of them were pretty negative about Trump in 2016 bar the Air Force guy.

10 years later, all are way more MAGA. The entire US culture has shifted right, especially after the George Floyd riots and COVID lockdowns.

Add in the Trump assassination attempt and Kirk's assassination and my friends could care less about j6 and "norms".

Some of them, including myself, think elements of hardcore MAGA is borderline cultish. But it pales in comparison to the dislike of the left.

The culture will shift again one day, but right now MAGA is on the up and up.

I doubt yall would believe this, but I’m probably the least conservative in my friend group. Most of my friends are much, much more conservative.

I believe you. I’ve seen loads, and spoken to some face to face, who are way more conservative than you.

I almost stopped reading your post when you said

Come on dude, it’s couldn’t care less.

Are they particularly religious?

Just curious really, as you know it's not particularly a big thing in the UK. Other than a few Catholic friends nobody I've known for years are regular church goers.

I find it really interesting how church seems a bigger thing in the States. To be honest I'm not sure why that is.

You don’t have to believe me, believe the election results!

Harris tried to make her entire campaign around norms, J6, 34x felon, and how Trump was a threat to democracy.

She proceeded to lose all 7 swing sweats and the biggest popular vote victory for a Republican since 1988.

For some people it’s still a big deal. For the majority of Americans, it’s not a thing people care about.

Pretty mixed. Although almost of all of them have become more religious in the last decade, which tracks with younger people seeking out God more.

I’d say I’m more religious than many of them. Most are regular church goers. My one buddy just converted to Catholicism and teaches at a Christian school. He might be the most religious.

I agree, though I would slightly rephrase your comment to say “it’s not a thing Trump voters in general care much about”

It’s all very sad. I can appreciate people see things differently to me but for a president to try and coup the government is a pretty big deal when it comes to protecting democracy and everything we hold dear.

If Starmer tried to do the same thing over here I would be appalled and extremely worried.

Also, being as honest as you can, if Biden had tried to do a Jan 6th to overturn a legitimate election result in his favour what would you and the thoughts of your friends be on that? I’d imagine you’d be not very happy?

I genuinely have no opinions on J6. I don’t discuss 2 things: J6 & Israeli/Gaza.

From my vantage point, there is so much propaganda on both sides that I struggle to separate the truth from the lie.

Fair enough.

Let me rephrase, and stay clear of Jan 6th specifically, but do you think it's good, that even years later, Trump still says 2020 was stolen? Obviously if you think it was then fine (well not fine as it wasn't but you know what I mean) but if you don't think it's stolen do you just consider Trumps rhetoric around the election being stolen as not that big of a deal?

Thanks for answering my questions by the way.

I think the election was illegally interfered with by Democrats and I’m glad Mark Zuckerberg publicly said he was directed by government agencies to throttle the Hunter Biden story. Would that have made a difference? Who knows. I’m skeptical. But for the gov to suppress relevant info in the days before an election is a vital threat to democracy.

The democrats and corporate media also clearly lied about Biden’s cognitive ability and as karma would have it, it absolutely blew up in their face.

I also think Comey and others blatantly lied about Trumps connection with Russia and he should go to jail.

Comey might be the most interesting person in politics because he is universally hated by both sides.

I think it's a bit rich to say the supposed suppression of the hunter biden story is a threat to democracy but then totally ignore the POTUS coming up with a fake elector plot to try and delay the transfer of power and get his VP to install fake electors so he could overturn a legitimate election result in his favour so he could carry on being president is a much bigger threat to democracy. Talking about the media I also find it interesting you don't seem to think Fox News deliberately lying and getting sued, and losing, the biggest media defamation case in history is also telling.

I'd also say year on year undermining the election process and making your base, and elected republican officals to believe, or willingly not care, that the 2020 election was stolen is not good. Saying elections are rigged (unless you win of course) is a threat to democracy I would argue but I doubt we'll agree on that.

I think Fox News, MSNBC, CNN, and the rest of them are poison. Thankfully, no one under the age of 70 watches them.

I, like all intelligent and noble people, only get my news from the BBC and Joe Rogan Podcast.

When CNN lose the biggest media defamation case in history to the tune of almost $1 billion then I will join your ranks, but until then they seem to me to be a tad different.

Give Trump a 3rd term and there won't be any CNN left. 😉

Quick Quiz: What group is the most religious in America and tend to hold the most conservative social beliefs?

Dont google it!

Mmmmm, that's a tough one. I would lean Mormon but would Amish count as well? I honestly have no clue so I'll go with my gut and say Mormon but I'm not confident.

Black Americans. Particularly those over 50. There is a reason Pete Buttigieg is polling at 0% with blacks.

Hint: It's not because of his stance on Israeli/Palestine.

Do you know what. I read your post to say which religious group so was naturally only thinking of religious groups.

I might have guessed that but probably would’ve said black men as my understanding was that black women still overwhelmingly vote democrat but again not overly sure.

I imagine Latino American also lean heavily right. I know Cubans generally do as a lot fled Fidel in Cuba in naturally tend to vote republican.
