Flying down tomorrow to watch them ... should be some great games and some unexpected results if the Wellington sevens are anything to go by :)

The problem is - New Zealand has been woeful lately. Kurt Baker was our only performing player last weekend - and he's injured.

We miss any kind of dangerous attacking threats. I'm sorry - but Ben Lam sucks at 7's. I thought he was extremely over rated for Auckland, but as a 7's player he's even more woeful. All he does is run hard in a streight line. But for a big guy, he can't break tackles - so he does a crappy little offload which 9/10 will go to ground or be knocked on. He's not exceptionally quick either.

We really miss Frank Halai. Desperately. But we also don't have any other dangerous players we've been able to rely on. Baker - gone. Stowers - I don't know where he is or why he's not playing, emarrasing he's not in there. Declan O'Donnell - injured and with the Highlanders. Buxton Popoali'i - Highlanders.

All our exciting backs are either playing SR, injured or otherwise not regularly selected. Instead we're playing the most conservative and boring team I think I've ever seen New Zealand produce. Sam Dickson? Has there been a less dangerous 7's player for New Zeland? Maybe Scott Curry who is also in the team. DJ Forbes, Tim Mikkilson, Lote Raikabula aren't performing up to their usual standard. The only three attacking threats I was for New Zealand was Gillies Kaka (I don't know why he wasn't used more), David Raikuna and Rocky Khan - all of who were used sparingly.

Well, SA's line-up in the pool stages is about as 'easy' as you could hope for. The game has proved to be very unpredictable though and with SA in the shape we're in I wouldn't take advancement for granted.

Our kicking needs to improve big time. We can't score more tries than the opposition and still lose games because Snyman can't kick for his life. My biggest wish for SA 7's is that the guys who are good at 7's stay in 7's. So far the only guy to have made an impact in the 15 man code is Gio Aplon but it's not as if both SA and the Stormers can't spare him. With Cecil Africa (and a whole host of others T_T) injured we need that type of guy like Aplon, Juries or Robert Ebersohn; the type of guy that can score from nothing. I hope Justin Geduld and Anthony Volminck get a look-in from Paul Treu.

I know they have their own reasons to invite Uruguay to play this tournament, but i thought they will invite Mexico after they reach the 3rd place in the last NACRA 7s and getting a spot for the Hong Kong 7s.
It could be the best way to get some great training for the up coming serious deal in HK.

Think Aplon is actually good where he is. No doubt he'd have continued to be successful in 7's - but I think he's probably been South Africa's best fullback/attacking threat. Plus - he's turning 31 this year. What ever good he could have achieved in 7's - probably wouldn't have lasted will 2016, so getting the younger guys more experience is crucial.

That's one thing I find frustrating about the NZ 7's team. You look at the guys they're using as starters in every tournament: Lote Raikabula (29), DJ Forbes (30 years old), Junior Tomasi Cama (32). We've been able to win tournements based off keeping a core group of players while bringing in young ones, but now that 7's is more competitive - we need to start brining in youngs guys now to be in the best shape for the Olympics. I'm not saying cast out players like Cama, as he's still arguably the best play maker in the world - but at least invest important gametime in youngs guys with exciting talent - who will commit to 2016.

Tough blow with Phil Mack being injured for us going into the weekend, hopefully the squad has the depth to overcome this. I'm hoping for a similar result as last week whoich should start pulling us away from the relegation zone.

Whoa, whoa, whoa - rewind. You didn't give that statement the reverence it deserved. There is a pub, in the United States of America, where if you drink a pint in 7 seconds it's free?

Tis' really is the land of oppertunity.

Ever seen an American pint?

I have never been there but I would try to do my best to get as many free pints as I could if ever in Las Vegas. It's called Todd's English Pub.

From their facebook here are what they look like all lined up:

That looks fairly easy - one of those pints in 7 seconds is nothing.

It's not like it's hard to get free booze in Vegas but I'm staying pretty close to City Center this weekend so I'll have to check it out. I've had lunch at Todd English before and it's a bit overpriced but still decent food and they have decent beer selection.

They're only into the 5th match so far and we've seen a blowout in South Africa over Uruguay and a good one between England and Fiji (who won by 9.) Twitter took over the pitch apparently with one of their hash things. And New Zealand just scored the first try in their match against France late in the first half.

Canada over Kenya 19-12 Big match for that pool. Hard to see Uruguay finishing anywhere but last in the event they hardly had any possesion at all against South Africa and have two tough games to come.

Rugby Canada has had a hell of a day so far I saw those 3 tries by Dukelow, Hassler & Yakbutt. I know you have South Africa in a couple hours. But even the women's teams in the invitational tourney went undefeated.

Twas a great day yesterday ... it started with the wife and I driving down Las Vegas boulevard, and who should we see, but Gordon T. and the AB 7's side getting their photo taken by the "welcome to Vegas" sign ... so we stopped, and I had a quick chat and got my photo taken with some of the guys :)

The Sevens , itself, was awesome ... New Zealand was in good form, and we were cheering pretty loudly for both the ABs, and Canada ... really happy that Canada got home against Kenya :) ... other highlights were watching Portugal and Spain with theirwins over England and Australia

... hopefully day 2 will be just as good as day 1 :)

Another nice try by Carlin Isles it seems (didn't see him run 2m with the ball in the Wellington 7's). Gutted I can't watch it live.

Yeah USA delivered the goods in what was a must win game. Pleased with Canada's start against uruguay but we are in tough with New Zealand next match. How bad were England, they'd struggled till Wellington then won that event and now are playing horrible agian!!!
