Victor Matfield to end his career in England

Springbok legend Victor Matfield will join English Premiership side Northampton Saints after the Rugby World Cup, the club announced on Wednesday.

This is a bit of a shock to me. Purely because I thought he was going to be one of the Assistant Coaches for the Bulls next year.

If he has a similar influence for Northampton as Brad Thorn had at Leicester, than it's a very good signing for Saints!

Hmmm. A legend of the game but one that is slowly but surely eroding the reputation he has built up for himself IMO.

If they use him as they did Bakkies at Toulon he could be a very good signing and excellent way to finish his very illustrious career.

By my reckoning he'll be helping the coaching staff at Saints, be playing occasionally and then be back to S.A. soon enough to take up a coaching role having had a nice pay cheque for the last few years.

The amount just having a guy like that in camp can help develop young players.

Having said all this, when he's in beside Lawes who is the back up? Christian Day?
