What series are you watching at the moment ?

Solike, we keep mentioning things like LOST, Fringe and Heroes from time to time so I figured why not make a thread where we discuss the series we're all watching at the moment, kinda just like the movie thread, so you can mention and discuss a number of different shows.

Anything at all.

I recently bought and watched Firefly and Serenity (I sort of count it as part of the series) for the first time in my life, and it is absolutely the best thing I've ever seen, it's made me fall even -more- in love with Summer Glau (didn't think it was even possible, since I absolutely adore her in the Sarah Conner Chronicles), her part of River Tam was just so unbelievably well done, some of the scenes in both Firefly and Serenity between her and Simon had tears welling up in my eyes.

Firefly isn't just a very cool Sci Fi show, it's a show that literally -changed- me, and even the way I look at the world at the moment, Joss Whedon did a fantastic job and if Fox would have just left him alone to do his thing, maybe the show would have made it past 14 episodes.

Another series I'm watching at the moment is Battlestar Gallactica, I went out and bought the Season 4 part1 DVD yesterday and finished watching the very same day, the last episode of Season 3 was a teaser to end all teasers, it absolutely -killed- me to know I would have to wait a while to get my hands on Season 4.

Dexter

Why? Because it's a highly innovative take on drama; the fact that the viewer is made to empathize with a serial killer. The opening sequence is awesome, a montage of Dexter's morning routing with closeups of him shaving, slicing bacon, squirting ketchup etc. Also, each episode has a theme which is alluded to in the language of Dexter's monologues. For example the most recent episode I watched was about Dexter having to act different parts in his life, and thus he used phrases such as 'exit stage left' and 'take their cue'. Brilliant script, uses the Miami setting well, with local issues involved in the plot.

The Wire

The most incredible TV series I've ever seen. It is so realistic, you'd think there were camera crews following real police and drug crews around Baltimore. I said that Dexter used Miami well; Baltimore is the main character in The Wire. The realism is shown in the lack of a soundtrack; any music heard is from car radios or suchlike. Also, the actors are brilliantly cast. They all do a good job; but it doesn't have that problem most American shows have where only attractive actors get cast. The Wire isn't afraid to show characters who are fat; drink too much; are homosexual... It's groundbreaking. The best bit is the political slant the show has; Series 2 focusses on the dockworker's struggles following the aftermath of Reagan's administration; Season 3 questions the political motives of Police Tactics and Season 4 looks into the Local Government and School system. The realism is so good that you are spared tedious happy endings; the show depicts such a wide range of characters that all are sympathised with to an extent, but you know that it's highly likely the gangsters will one day find a bullet and the policemen will one day cross the line and get sacked.

Weeds

Funny, though maybe it's got a little tired. Again an interesting take - a suburban mom who starts running a drug empire. However it's hilarious; and there are a lot of political digs taken here there and everywhere, summed up by the opening song's mockery of the suburbs. Again the location is important, and Southern California's huge Mexican influence is a big part of the show's storyline.

Sunshine

Steve Coogan wrote and starred in this. I need say no more. In the same vein as so many other Northern dramas (The Street; Clocking Off) the main characters are working class, struggling with money and family problems. In this, Steve Coogan is a compulsive gambler, who is eventually kicked out by his wife. His 8 year old son increasingly spends time with his grandfather (who knows him as Sunshine). The show is about the relationship between the son and his granddad and Steve Coogan's quest to win his wife back and overcome his addiction. The ending made me cry. And nothing ever makes me cry, apart from losing at penalties in World Cups.

Outrageous Fortune (New Zealand)

Well the latest series has just finished and they are showing again the first series on a different night for those who may have missed it when it started 3 years ago.

The story of the "West" family...incidentally from West Auckland ala "Westies". Think white trailer trash but not quite that bad...the Wests do have certain codes that they follow and the characters are brilliant portrayed by the actors who you would think perhaps have a good understanding of the whole West Auckland "Westies" culture. All the characters are well suited for the show which always borders on family chaos, drama and trying to make something better of a situation. The West family would almost be seen as dysfunctional, however it is warming to see that they do have a great sense of loyalty to each other despite their bickering. It is this dual dynamic of seeing a family that is always at each others throats one minute...then the next they are defending each other against all comers which makes the show so successful....as the viewer can often see some of the same themes happening in their own lives.

However without a witty script the show would bomb...and it is here with the dialogue that Outrageous Fortune has made its mark. It is well written and its dialogue draws the viewer deeper into the show.

BTW.....I know where the house is that they use for this show.

I watched a bit of the first Season of Dexter, it's a really interesting show, and very -different- which already gives it some props, but I havn't watched it past the 6th episode, might do it someday though.

so today I bought the DVD of.

Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles

Apart from being a complete and utter Terminator fanboy since I can remember, this truelly is one of the best shows I'm watching at the moment in my opinion, only thing better was Firefly, and I only got that a week ago.

It's the first season which I've already watched, but I felt like watching it again so much that I just had to buy the DVD today.
I love Summer Glau in this as well, I love that she always gets the weirdest / oddest roles and she does them so brilliantly. What I also enjoy is the way you get to see her sort of 'learn' how to be more human, since we don't know what type of model she is, it's highly suggested that she is a very special one though, probably with the cabaility to 'become' more human, and that's what sold me.

On a side note I'm also watching Season 2 at the moment, and Episode 7 aired today !
Should have it by tomorrow then :D
can't wait.

Right my TV Series list - Dramas/thrillers is currently like this:

Fringe - SKY1
Spooks - BBC1
Prison Break - Sky1
Heroes - BBC2/3

Also catching up on 24 Day 6 on DVD ready for 24: Redemption at the end of the month and also Day/series 7...

Tempted to get into Burn Notice of Virgin1 as I have heard good things about it... and when I do get a chance I enjoy CSI, CSI:Miami...

Seems to be a lot of Good TV around at the moment just not enough time for it all...

True Blood
A very tame programme considering it has boobs in every episode. But my flatmate likes it so i watch it.

Californication
Becoming very samey in the second series. Getting a little bored of it.

Big Bang Theory
Maintained its humour through into the 2nd series. Not bad, but not great.

...I'm sure I watch more programmes regularly but i can't think of them right now.

Firefly is amaaaaaazing, the fact they canned it is a joke.
I've heard Battlestar Galactica is the best thing on TV at the moment so I might give that a go.
I've also started watching the OC, due to my housemates. Does that make me gay?

I'm actually on the lookout for the Firefly fan DVD "we did the impossible" or something like that, just saw a clip of it yesterday on youtube and I MUST HAVE IT NOW !
Firefly really is the tragedy of modern television, but in the same breath it's also the cinderella story with it being like the first cancelled series to ever produce a major motion picture in Serenity.

So in my quest to get my hands on anything that Summer Glau is in, I'm looking at my next DVD collection to be the 4400 series, anyone watched it or busy watching it ?

I'm watching Fringe. It's awesome!

I also love Californication, but mainly because Hank Moody is a legend. B)

Then my top 5 at the moment are:

The Unit
LOST (I always love it)
Friday Night Lights
Californication
The War at Home (Another legend in the TV world)

House. It's all about House. Never fails to please, series 5 is yet another amazing effort. And I'm only 3 episodes in so far.

Oh dear god.
Well i watched one episode of Crusoe today.
What an abomination! It was just utter shite, an over embelishment of the novel and it really just stank of a putrid attempt of trying to milk the story into a shitty series (or 5).

Heroes is probably the best show on TV at the moment. I am not enjoying the new season of House as much as the last couple. I am also watching the West Wing again, somewhat inspired by the recent election - probably the best show ever (yes it is better than firefly :p)

My flat mate is currently watching Fringe...10 minutes in and i'm bored out of my mind.
Hence the reason one web page is opened onto TRF and another has porn!

I've been watching Heroes Season 3 I'm up to episode 8 and it's a bit annoying having to wait a week for the next episode even thou we're only up to episode 2 here in New Zealand. I might just wait for the season to end than get all the episodes and watch the season as a whole. Alot more characters and heaps more powers makes for a good season already with heaps more mysteries.

Terminator series has been pretty good too so far I think I've missed a few episodes I've got up to 7 I think but haven't been able to get them because I work away from home. Off to a good start and I hope it stays on track for another season because I enjoy it more than I do the movies.

I've also been watching Home & Away because we're about 15-20 episodes behind here in New Zealand I've been downloading them and it's pretty hardcase watching them when they come on Tv because I like telling everyone whats gonna happen because they don't believe me that I've seen them. I've been watching it since probably more than 10 years ago and just recently started getting back into it about 2 months ago. Alot of new characters but good old Summer Bay still keeps crackin.

So i'm sitting at the table trying to get some writing done and my flat mate puts on the tv and watches another of his programmes (i should note how much tv he actually watches!): -

Pushing Daisies - Oh dear god, how can they base an entire programme on such a fickle concept. I actually let it distract me for 20 mins, but it annoyed me so much that i just had to leave the room. The only good thing about that programme was the vivid use of colours. The narator popping up every 30 seconds like i was reading a book just annoyed the f*** out of me.

The X Factor.

Lol. Quite funny to see the controversy and hear some great voices. Can't believe that Parliament got involved in the case about Laura White's exit from the show last week.
Clear evidence that the government has nothing better to do.
In the words of the presenter of TXF, "WAT?"

Aw gaw, everyone in my house watches X Factor. Parliament really has nothing to do - Russell Brand and now Laura White? Get a grip.
I had just sat down to watching Stephen Fry in America... Didn't get to the end of the opening credits before they all started whining 'aaaw this is booooooring' and switched over to I'm a Celebrity. I often wonder how the f*** any of them got to University. The uncultured BAAAAASTARDS!!!!
So now I'm sat in my room finishing off a precis for my seminar on the history of archaeological thought tomorrow morning and watching the modern day Oscar Wilde on iPlayer.
Cheers.
