Outrageous Fortune (New Zealand) Well the latest series has just finished and they are showing again the first series on a different night for those who may have missed it when it started 3 years ago. The story of the "West" family...incidentally from West Auckland ala "Westies". Think white trailer trash but not quite that bad...the Wests do have certain codes that they follow and the characters are brilliant portrayed by the actors who you would think perhaps have a good understanding of the whole West Auckland "Westies" culture. All the characters are well suited for the show which always borders on family chaos, drama and trying to make something better of a situation. The West family would almost be seen as dysfunctional, however it is warming to see that they do have a great sense of loyalty to each other despite their bickering. It is this dual dynamic of seeing a family that is always at each others throats one minute...then the next they are defending each other against all comers which makes the show so successful....as the viewer can often see some of the same themes happening in their own lives. However without a witty script the show would bomb...and it is here with the dialogue that Outrageous Fortune has made its mark. It is well written and its dialogue draws the viewer deeper into the show. BTW.....I know where the house is that they use for this show.
