I know that the flyhalf will usually have as opponent the other flyhalf. This means that the no. 10 will be tackled most often by the opponent no. 10.
What about the other positions? And which are the second and the third direct opponents for each position? If the opponent flyhalf will miss the tackle who will try to tackle (most often)?
Could you make a list please, something like this:

no. 10
- almost 40% of the phases will have direct opponent no. 10
- 30%, no. 9
- 20%, no. 7
- 10% the other players on the field

You tackle whoever is running at you, pretty much.

I doubt the 10 makes many tackles on the opposition 10 as they're the distributors so they're not going to be running at the opposition 10 very much.

You don't mark up players, except backs before a scrum or lineout. Tight 5 forwards will mainly tackle other forwards as they'll defend closer to the ruck. But as said you tackle whoever has the ball in the channel you're defending.

We props don't like to run so far as that a fullback will tackle us usually offload. We rarely make line breaks anyway and of course as wingers have a wing to stay on that when they come off they'll usually go no further in than the center. 14 on 14 and 11 on 11 is a rarity but you have no one as a "direct opponent".

As a lock I normally defend close to the ruck (if not in, which is also often the case) and therefore mostly tackle other forwards. However I once made a try saving tackle on a center after a chase.
