So the nominations for WRMPOTY are out, with a couple notable absentees and some interesting inclusions. The nominees for the award are; Owen Farrell - agree totally. Not expecting much disagreement there Mark Itoje - likewise. Israel Folau - tricky for him not playing in a particularly winning side domestically or internationally. He’s definitely been a like breaker and very exciting to watch this year, but overall I’m not convinced. Good feather in the cap for hopefully (after recent results) an improving Aussie national team. Beudan Barrett - I get why he is in there, and I’ve watched pretty much all the Canes and AB games he had played in. He’s not hit the heights of 2016, but hasn’t put too many feet wrong, and he’s broadly lived up to the sky high expectations on him, so fair enough he is in there. Reiko Ioane - this one I’m certainly not convinced about. He has absolutely started his AB career well and was one of the ABs better players during rugby champs and Lions series. However, if I weigh up his influence and quality against say Hogg for Glasgow and Scotland, I think the fact that he is playing for the ABs means he’s going to be less of a standout. So, for a Scot with a Kiwi father, I’m completely happy with the English choices but not bought into the AB choices Notable absentees Jonathan Davies - played a vital role at club level for scarlets and was one of the players of the tour with the Lions down under. Thought he deserved a nod. Stuart Hogg - appreciate he was injured for the Lions tour, but everything else he has done in a Scotland or Glasgow jersey has been devistating. Kieran Reid - immense presence in an AB back row going through some evolution. Always performed well at international level, but possibly missed it due to less game time with Saders. Still helped them to a Super Rugby win though. What do others think of the list? Fair reflection of the best rugby players in the world over 2017 or not?
