If SA win the world cup then they're a shoe in - if England do then it brings others into play.

Reality is team of the year in a world cup year should be the world cup champions don't know how you even get close to justifying anyone else....Japan maybe.

I think Uruguay deserved some love as a nomination for finishing a record 2nd place in the ARC and then knocking off Fiji. Both of those are pretty bonkers and put them beyond the ABs in my opinion.

Japan beating 2x Tier1 and getting out the pools is pretty damn historic too.

Winner of the Rugby world cup is hard to look past especially if either

England we have played 4 games in a row vs the rugby championship and beat them all to win the final.

But South Africa is a harder sell(will be ahead of England in the running if they win) , lost to NZ, then won 4 tier 2 games, beat a struggling Wales by 3 points. And then did well to beat a strong england team in the final.

Japan(currently a tier 2 team) will be the SA rival. Punched above their weight and won. 4 pool games getting 4 wins 3BP and vs 2 tier 1 teams. And lost to SA but kept them within a score at half time. And made it to a record 6th in the world.

Most will agree,
