He still hasn't started contact yet, so doubtful although if fit he would be a great shout.

Maybe, but likely he'd have to show he's match fit and ready in the August warm ups which may be difficult considering he's unlikely to play for the Scarlets again. Gatland values him and the line out skills he brings so wouldn't be shocked to see him make the cut either way.

    Here’s mine:

    1. M. Vunipola / Genge
    2. George / Hartley / Cowan-Dickie
    3. Sinckler / Cole / Williams
    4. Itoje / Lawes
    5. Kruis / Launchbury
    6. Wilson / Robshaw / Shields
    7. T. Curry / Underhill
    8. B. Vunipola
    9. B. Youngs / Care
    10. Farrell / Ford
    11. May / Cokanasiga
    12. Tuilagi
    13. Slade / Joseph
    14. Watson / Nowell
    15. Daly / Brown

I’d be happy enough with Wilson covering Billy at 8 and I’d prefer Shields to Hughes.

Taking only one player for 12 is a bit of a risk, but Farrell or Slade could do that role.

    Mine would be:

    1. M. Vunipola
    2. George
    3. Sinckler
    4. Itoje
    5. Lawes (but I think this would change with Launch and Kruis depending on opposition)
    6. Underhill
    7. T. Curry
    8. B. Vunipola
    9. Robson
    10. Farrell (I'd bring on Ford more, especially if Farrell loses his head)
    11. May
    12. Tuilagi
    13. Slade
    14. Cokanasiga
    15. Daly

    16. Hartley (Bring on when Farrell loses his cool to provide some stability)
    17. Genge
    18. Williams
    19. Launchbury
    20. Wilson
    21. Spencer
    22. Cipriani
    23. Nowell

    24. LCD
    25 Moon
    26. Cole (Purely because of a lack of other options)
    27. Kruis
    28. Shields
    29. Youngs/Care (toss up really)
    30. Ford
    31. Brown

I'm factoring slightly that Farrell will still be captain and so has to start.

    1. Healy
    2. Best (I think there are definitely better hookers and maybe better captains but it's too late to change it)
    3. Furlong
    4. Henderson (need him in there because our flankers and hooker aren't strong ball carriers)
    5. Ryan
    6. O'Mahony (I complain about him but he is actually our best 6)
    7. Van Der Flier (please let him he fit)
    8. Stander (although if Conan keeps up his current form...)

    9. Murray
    10. Sexton (both hinging on better form)
    11. Stockdale
    12. Henshaw
    13. Ringrose
    14. Earls
    15. Kearney

    16. Cronin (whatever about impact subs, I think he's a better player than Scannell)
    17. Kilcoyne
    18. Porter
    19. Toner
    20. Conan
    21. Cooney
    22. Carbery
    23. Larmour

Scannell, John Ryan, Beirne, Jordi Murphy (unless SOB finds his form, although someone like Deegan or Jack O'Donoghue could come in here), Marmion, Ross Byrne (Carbery and Carty might be better attacking 10s but he's easily the most composed which is more important in a backup 10 imo), Bundee Aki and Will Addison in the squad.

I'd swap Marmion or Byrne for Adam Byrne and keep the 31 players you have there. Conan should straight up start with Nordi or Beirne on the bench at this stage, he's way ahead of Stander right now.

I'd swap Best and Scannell too and make Ryan match day captain too, I feel that could rejuvenate the team massively which is needed.

I'd agree with most of that except I think we should take 6 halfbacks. I'm not convinced by the whole 'Cooney can cover 10' idea. I'd probably make Ryan captain and start Conan at the moment but realistically Joe won't.

    So I think squad should be;

    Props
    Joe Moody
    Owen Franks
    Karl Tu'inukuafe
    Ofa Tu'ungafasi

    Hookers
    Dane Coles
    Cody Taylor
    Nathan Harris

    Locks
    Brodie Retallick
    Sam Whitelock
    Scott Barrett
    Patrick Tuipulotu

    Back Row
    Kieran Reid
    Sam Cane
    Liam Squire
    Akira Ioane
    Shannon Frizell
    Ardie Savea
    Vaea Fifita

    Half backs
    Aaron Smith
    TJ Perenara

    1st 5/8ths
    Beauden Barrett
    Richie Mo’unga

    Centres
    Ryan Crotty
    Jack Goodhue
    Ngani Laumape
    Anton Leniert-Brown

    Outside backs
    Ben Smith
    Jordie Barrett
    David Havili
    Reiko Ioane
    Waisake Naholo

    Talking points (for the above);
    - gone for an extra back rower as we’ve had some injury problems there recently and I worry that given the speed we need to hit rucks to generate the quick ball we want, we’ll likely lose a number to injury. I also don’t think the drop off is particularly steep if any of these players came in
    - 3 hookers as Dane has his injury problems too and it’s one of those specialised positions that seems to usually have 3 deep travelling.
    - only 2 half backs. The drop off from TJ and Aaron to the rest is a chasm and I don’t feel comfortable having passengers at the World Cup is appropriate. Also they’ve had a relatively ok injury history and both have phenomenal stamina so should be able to cope with the volume of games
    - only 2 1st 5/8ths. This is completely driven by no D-Mac, with Havili in his place. Jordie can cover centre and if desperately needed 10 as well as 14&15 so he will be our emergency 10 I think. Havili has been excellent this season in super rugby, been around the wider squad for a while now and can cover a number of positions well.
    - no Nonu; he’ll be at the end of a long season and he’s not getting much rest from the Blues, so I worry that he will run out of steam at a crucial point.

Pretty sure it’s a requirement to take 5 props.

It is as is three hookers basically. There must be sufficient front rower cover for a last minute injury.

Taking 4 halfbacks total is also courting disaster.

Think Australia only took 2 hookers to the last RWC but I may be wrong.

You're right. I may have interpreted the laws wrong. I did find a quote from Cheika about believing they could cover in the short term so it's possible they felt one of the props are backrows fit the requirements.

I was reading the rules and seems that you’re right regarding the need for emergency replacements to be in the 31 man squad. Does this mean though that at least one of your props must be able to play and be “suitably trained and experienced” in packing down both sides of the scrum, or you’re going to have to take 6 props? If one has to take 5, I’d have to drop Fifita or Akira, although would be reticent to do so.

On 4 half backs, I’m using Jordie as a fallback at 10 if needs be. He has done it at age grade level and filled in there a couple of times for the Canes, so as an emergency could do the job. I’d also suggest that if one of the half backs was injured, even the day before a game, the other could play 80 mins and they’d then have someone come out for the next game. I think also if needed Ben Smith could fill in at half back.
