1st test - Australia v British & Irish Lions

Well, let me calm down because it hasn't been confirmed, but if Jac Morgan doesn't start for the Lions, I'm prepared to go to war. Just call me. I'll be there. Right now, I'm on a train to Edinburgh, seething to the very pit of my soul. I'm a Lions nerd. I went in 2017 in NZ and I hate to say it, but 50% of me wants the Lions to lose. No Morgan is just an abomination. If it was VDF I wouldn't be so angry. But Curry ?
Is it though? It's fair to say Morgan probably deserves it the most but 'abomination'? Come on now …

The Curry disrespect is unreal. I'd be the first to say he wasn't great in the last game. The amount of how can you pick Curry posts, he was world class in the 6N only beaten by Louis Bielle-Biarrey for player of the tournament. Morgan is playing better based on the tour but as player Im picking Curry every day. I'd play both for what its worth, but if your suggesting VDF over Curry then stop watching Rugby.
He's a phenomenal player, but he looks absolutely bollocksed. Either fatigue from the season or his hip is in bits again, take your pick, but he's not performing well.

Ok suggesting to stop watching Rugby is obviously joke he is clearly a very good player but VDF is not better then Tom Curry.

Curry had an excellent season. But he’s not looked up to that kind of level yet on tour.

Of course he might just be a Test Match Animal ™️ but he’s also come back from a career threatening injury, so part of me wonders if the time lost to that, the sheer volume of tough rehab or the injury itself have caught up with him a little. Also due to have wrist surgery post tour.

From my vantage point VdF is comfortably established as better than Curry. But we're not on here to agree with each other!
We won't agree which is fair, it's a Lions tour after all. However sure you think VDF is better I think its Curry we could end it here but your saying VDF is comfortably established as being better your taking it past your opinion here, he just isn't it.

It's pay back for the years of making everyone put up with Alun Wyn Jones.

If you're on a train to Scotland you're going the wrong way to create an army with pitchforks in the valleys

Wouldnt it be better if the Lions coach was not allowed to be the current coach of an international team? That would ensure his selection was more objective.

I don't disagree that current coaches shouldn't be involved, no one wins there (although they're generally the only ones who can get a clause in their contracts to allow it).

Is there massive bias here though. It looks like representation will be exactly in order of current world rankings where there's currently a sizeable gap from 2 to 3 and 3 to 4 and a cushion between 1 and 2. Form is great, consistent success at international level is better.

If you take coaching styles aside, realistically most the wider squad pick themselves regardless of coach, and I’d probably say 60-70% of the test team would too.

The only areas of real contention in the last few tours are the fringe players picked to back up the mid week team at the end and that won’t really have an impact on the overall series result.

I can’t believe I’m saying this about a Lions Test Match but i just feel so flat about the game at the weekend. Normally in test week on a Lions tour I’d be rewatching all the classic moments from tours gone by and reading as much build-up as I could but this time?. I’m ambivalent about it tbh. This tour has felt flat and mediocre from the start. I don’t think the Lions have been great so far and yet I still fully expect us to win the test series. I don’t think beating this Wallabies team should be thought of as an outstanding achievement. We’ve got the best of 4 nations to pick from and, as good a coach as Joe Schmidt is, they are 8th in the World for a reason. This tour has basically been a lot of uninspiring warm-up matches to get to a test series which, if the Lions play to their potential, should be done after 2 test matches.

Purely from a rugby perspective, I’m much more hyped about the NZ/SA game at Eden Park than I am about the Lions.
