Cape Town - Former Springbok loose forward Solly Tyibilika has been shot dead here, according to reports.

Craig Ray, senior rugby writer for the Times and Weekender newspapers said on the social networking site, Twitter, that a police spokesperson confirmed Tyibilika's death.

"Nyanga Police spokesperson confirms the death of Solly Tyibilika but says incident occurred in Gugulethu," tweeted Ray.

Kuanda Ntunja, Xhosa commentator rugby commentator at pay-channel SuperSport, also confirmed Tyibilika's death on the social network.

"Just heard shocking news.

"I have been told that he was shot and murdered in cape town. R.I.P. Solly Tyibilika.

"Makhaya Jack (former SARU player) has just come from Sollys home in PE and he has confirmed...Solly Tyibilika has passed away," Ntunja tweeted on Sunday afternoon.

Tyibilika, 32, played eight Test matches for the Springboks between 2004 and 2006. He played provincial rugby for Griquas, the Sharks, Golden Lions, Southern Kings and Border.

Cape Town – In the wake of former Springbok flank, Solly Tyibilika's murder, reports suggest that the fatal shooting was in fact no coincidence.

VIDEO: Rest in Peace Solly Tyibilika

According to the Daily Voice, Tyibilika was at a local drinking hotspot in the New Crossroads township at around 14:20 on Sunday afternoon when two gunmen walked up behind him while he was drinking and shot him in a rain of gunfire.

“I was in the kitchen when I heard the gunshots, then when I went to check what happened, Solly was injured, but (then) he died on the scene ,” the owner of the shebeen told the tabloid.

The owner could not confirm the number of gunmen who entered the premises.

Another witness recalls how one of the gunmen instructed him to move out of the way and said that Tyibilika was targeted.

“One of them came to me and told me to ‘move to the side’. He said he wasn’t here to shoot me, but Solly who was sitting behind me,” said the unidentified witness.

“I ran and went under the table and then I heard them shooting too many rounds to count.

“After that they left, but I was too scared to move and I could hear him (Tyibilika) struggle to breathe.

“I waited until people came to see what happened and ran to my car and went home.

“This was not a robbery because they left all the other patrons alive and killed him – there was no conversation, they just shot him,” he added.

“And Solly clearly didn’t expect it because he didn’t show any sign of fear while sitting there.”

It is further reported that two other patrons in the shebeen were injured and were taken to a nearby hospital.

Tyibilika, along with Sandile Maqungu and Simon Shumane, were arrested last month after police stopped Tyibilika’s vehicle after noticing he was driving without his headlights switched on, they then found a firearm hidden in his glove compartment.

They appeared in Athlone Magisrates’ Court on October 19, where they were charged with the illegal possession of a firearm. Tyibilika was released on bail of R800. A week after their release, Shumane was fatally gunned down.

Meanwhile, no suspects have been arrested in connection with Tyibilika’s murder, which was confirmed by SAPS spokesperson, Captain Frederick van Wyk.

“Yesterday (Sunday), two unidentified men entered a tavern in a New Crossroads, in Gugulethu, and shot at the people inside,” he said.

“They then ran out and one was seen jumping into a cockroach taxi and another ran in to the direction of KTC.”

It just gets worse. :(

I was shocked when I heard the news. I really enjoyed Solly's fiery style of play when he was with the Sharks.
Terrible way to die, so violent.

Very unfortunate. R.I.P.

Although, from that article just above, it seems there was more to this than just an innocent bloke being murdered.

Yeah

he has done some bad things in the past... but still, no reason to kill the guy. He was a tough guy and didn't shy away from the physical side of things. Also he was my first choice player at flanker in Rugby 08.

RIP Solly

I'm not saying good job, rather I just think it's unfortunate that he may have got himself into something so dangerous like that.

There's a whole family out there who have lost a member of their group because of it and so it's unfortunate in that respect too.

R.I.P. Solly

Man, this is total BS. He was pulled over once by a cop who found a semi-automatic gun in his car. A simple gun that a lot of South Africans have at home. Some even have several at home, but this is being used to portray the guy as a bad man.

Even if he was a guy with a shady character, it still doesn't give anyone the right to just shoot him like a dog. He has done a lot for SA rugby, especially in getting the young black population interested in it. Even more so than Chester Williams back in 1995. He was the first ever black South African to score a try for the Springboks when he had his debut against Scotland in 2004.

It's very sad to see this happening.

I'm not saying he is a bad man, or that he deserved to die, but the fact that he alone was gunned down and his acquaintance who was with him when they were pulled over was also killed suggests he may have been involved in something dodgy. The point is, it seems he wasn't shot for no reason, though I'm not saying the reason was a justifiable one.

Just because he may have been influential for SA Rugby, it doesn't mean he can't have been involved in something silly, and I'm not saying I know he was, because I don't know that for sure, but neither do you, so why you think you can just call it BS straight away is beyond me. All I'm saying is certain things reported suggest it wasn't a random shooting.

what happened to his career, he seemed to disappear after 2006, hardly even saw him in Super Rugby after that

really?

To the black community? Yes. Remember, Chester Williams was coloured, not black. In South Africa a huge difference.

Solly's career went sour when he left the Sharks to play for the Lions in 2007. He felt he had a better chance of playing regularly in Jo'burg since he had a lot of people to compete with in Durban with Muller, Venter, Ackermann, Brits, Botes, van den Berg and Daniel

Don't know if the media calling him a quota player affected his game, but yeah he hasn't quite been the same since then. Even for the Bulldogs in the few games I was able to watch he didn't look above that level, even was playing club rugby in Cape Town this year.

As for comparing his and Chester's impact on black South Africans, well I would imagine so, 'cause not only is Chester not black, he is not seen as either. Solly was really the first black player to make an impact in SA rugby, and is seen as such by the black community.

Edit: lol, should of refreshed my page.
