I'm watching CNN, and just saw that around 40,000,000 Americans are Functionally Illiterate. What? What the heck is wrong with this place? A large percentage of these people have highschool diplomas!?! There closing question was "Can America remain the sole Super-Power with 40,000,000 of its citizens being functionally illiterate?" Uhm, I have an answer for you, Lou Dobbs...NO! These aren't the illegal aliens everyone is in a fuss about right now. These are card holding Americans.
I don't understand how this can be. This is being called our national shame. Yeah, it is a shame. We're stock full of retards. I'm so flippin' ****** right now...this is an outrage. These are the people that f___ up my fries at McDonalds...Yeah, that beeping noise you hear means they're done...take them out of the fryer...No, it's not your cell-phone.
What's hard to comprehend is how these people function. Reading and writing are keystones of my everyday activities. I read constantly to digest new ideas, see new perspectives and view the world. How narrow of a world view does illiteracy present? It's a shame...it's a let down...it's an embarrasment.

thats what happens when you have democrats in control and they allow people to make welfare checks a lifestyle and a source of income..

They do it here aswell. It encourages people to be lazy pricks. These people DON'T EVEN TRY!

The downside to socialism is it does away with natural selection.
So, all you people that don't believe in God and religion, and favour science and evolution, you should do away with believing in socialism as it runs counteractive to your beliefs in darwinism.
Just a quick jab...now on with my rant.
Seriously though...think about it. In nature the weaker animals are constantly killed off...the same has happened in human history. Not now, though. Idiots keep on reproducing and reproducing...they can't feed themselves so the other finches jump down off their branches and give them a deshelled nut. We now have multiple generations of people living off of the work of others. Not that I'm not against social aid...but we've allowed a horrible cycle to start. There has to be a better solution to the problems that weigh on our societies. Surely we can help the poor in more ways than food and finance. Teach a man to fish, eh?

How can you blame the democrats for 40million illiterate adults? How about the Republicans "No kid left behind" BS? That's going to do it's fair share to completely blow a whole generations education.

Let's also not forget that you are the fatest nation by a mile. So not only will you be stupid, you will be stupid and obese. Great combo.

The democrats have been in control for 5 minutes, what about the 12 years of Republican control and the 6 years under the chief gimp in the big house.

They say Bullies are dumb and frustrated, so that explains why the US bullies the whole world around.

I don't believe that the USA has 40M people whom operate as functionally illiterate. I think that CNN is bull-******** you there.

The USA has a population of just over 300M and there is no way that their literacy rate is below 90%.

But anyway did you know that the USA has no official language? English is the de-facto offical language but it has never been officially declared at federal level. Weird!

it's too much of a hot potato, if one party comes out in favour of it they'll lose a massive percentage of the ethnic voting bloc

Come over here...it will become quite believable. There are also a huge percentage (like 45%) who don't read a single book in a year.

Very True...that's why they have to sneak it under the radar and work via reform.

Yea but republicans do not believe in this give to the poor bullshit, we believe in make yourself better

Thats why i dont believe in spiking up the taxes to pay for those lazy ******** who don't do anything to make themselves better, i understand if you work and your in and out of a job but im talking those people who dont work and dont try to work and they just ***** and moan about the government.

Still doesn't take away from the fact that republicans in 12 year of power have done sfa about literacy rates. It's even worse when you take DC into account, where the level of functional illiteracy is at 33% compared to 21% nationally, which for the last 12 years has been subject to a Republican congress and limited in tackling the problem. It's far too naive to take the attitude that if they can't help themselves then screw them, sometimes people actually need a helping hand.

There's a difference between a "helping hand" and doing something for someone. Lending a hand implies partnership...whereas people expect things to be done for them.
Let's not forget that you typically don't see the results of government actions for around 10 years or so. The world we live in today was really shaped by politicians in the past. Todays politicians are trying to reverse those results and we really won't see the full result of today for another 10 years or so.

No clue...how about a bill to make parents responsible. A tax break for 2 parent families...things that encourage a proper family structure, and that promote a social conscience? Absent Fathers and Idiot Mothers have done wonders for our society.

And the "no children left behind" bill is supposed to fix that?
[/b]

That bill doesnt really do much it just ensures standarized testing like the OGT (ohio graduation test) which is an absolute joke of a test.

That's my point exactly. You'll just have a bunch of people who are completely useless, but you know what? They sure as hell can pass a test. The problem is teachers are more likely to teach you how to pass the test rather than to learn the subject. If they don't the school loses funding. What a novel idea that is, let's take money away from the schools that are struggling. Plus it'll mean things like gym and arts will be cut(mostly at the younger grades as in high school it becomes optional I presume).
