At my leaving lunch for work last year I remember getting into a bit of a discussion with one of my work colleagues who was trying to defend him and she was saying how his record on Covid wasn’t that bad and why he should remain PM and how he could not possibly have foreseen how bad it was going to be. This was a few months before he was forced to resign. I pointed out his record was in fact a disaster and how he missed Cobra meetings at the end of Jan/ Feb 2020 to work on a book to make money to pay off his divorce and get married to Carrie, that he could clearly see how people were dying in Northern Italy at that time and that we had the highest death rate in Europe which he failed to heed. And he was just the biggest liar as shown by being sacked before as a journalist and from the cabinet before. Two other of my work colleagues also tried chimed in to defend him. I just did not understand this whole mentality of of “he’s not that bad” and seeing him through rose tinted glasses has an undertone racist theme. From an ethnic minority, who was born and grown up in this country I can tell you it appears Boris being white and English (although born in the US) combined with his bumbling persona are the main reasons his supporters defend him and to give him more leeway. Just a sad reflection of Conservative Party members who voted for Liz Truss but didn’t vote for Rishi and why they changed the rules so they couldn’t not vote him in.
