All time best rugby player

Its hard to say who's the best overall but here what I think in each position,

1. Wilson Whineray
2. Sean Fitzpatrick/Keith Wood/Daniel Dubroca
3. Robert Paparemborde
4. Martin Johnson
5. Colin Meads
6. Richard Hill
7. Michael Jones/Jean Pierre-Rives
8. Zizan Brooke
9. Gareth Edwards
10. Barry John/Gerald Davies/Hugo Porta/Naas Botha
11. Jonah Lomu
12. Jo Maso
13. Phillipe Sella
14. Patrice Lagisquet
15. Serge Blanco

I think you could make cases for Eales, Horan, BOD and Carter.

give BOD a couple more years...the way carter is playing and if he contibues to develop and better himself as he has since day one..we may have an undisputed winner...eales is the man!...but horan?...no good!

What about Balshaw? :bana: [/b]

Hmm Good Question and it has to be someone I have seen play in my lifetime and if I had to pick just one I would be Ritchie Mcaw because of his overall effectiveness for his teams.

I'd agree with you on that one...HOWEVER

I don't think you can have a BEST player ever. You can have the best prop, hooker, flanker, scrum half, full back, best creative player, etc but not the best.

You could have "most influential player" for the one player who contributed more than anyone else to the success of a team. Richie Mcaw would certainly be an option then.

How does JPR not even get a mention?
I'd also argue Keith Wood up there in his position.
Carter definately needs a mention.

John Eales?? JPR?? Carter??? there should be 3 players for each position i reckon. Just too hard, and so many deserve a mention.

As previoulsy mentioned, Gareth Edwards has been voted the greatest rugby player of all time - and that was made well into the professional era.
So how did they come to that conclusion?
What aspects of the game did they look at?
Coz that must have been such a tough call to make.

Also...who voted Gareth Edwards?
Who was on the panel?

Any reason why Wales' best winger is playing fly-half? where is campo?surely his try scoring record deserves to be in there?pontypool front row are contenders? john eales second row?

no offence but this could be alot better

In my opinion if you were going to have a GREATEST TEAM EVER it would be

1)Graham Price
2)Bobby Windsor
3)Charlie Faulkner
4)Martin Johnson
5)John Eales
6)Richard Hill
7)Richie McCaw
8)Zinzan Brooke
9)Gareth Edwards
10)Jonny Wilkinson
11)Serge Blanco
12)Phillip Sella
13)Brain O'Driscoll
14)David Campesse
15)JPR Williams

If You say that I think Martin Johnson should be most certainly be up there, as he is the person who influenced English Rugby for a long time...

The question that I would like to ask is, Best Player Turned Best Coach or is there not such a thing??

Thats a good question heres some that imediately spring to mind. There's probably loads more I have'nt mentioned.

Dean Richards
Richard Hill
Rob Andrew
Phillipe St Andre

right now the man who has the most tries in international matches is a japanese. Daisuke Ohata plays wing for japan as well as his j league team, Kobelco Steelers, he has scored more tries than campo in half as many matches. although it is argues that this feat was achieved becos japan played shitty teams like georgia etc, t achieve such a feat still reckons merit
