Are we talking just the best second row, or the best player who played in the second row?

Johnson was an immense player, but I wouldn't have said he was technically as good a second row player as Eales. Probably have to go for either him or Mcbride from that list.

Colin Meads and Frik du Preez are worth a mention, I'd go for Johnson, closely followed by Meads and Eales.

The likes of Mcbride, Johnson and Meads are hardly ones to write off.

Since Colin Meads & Frik Du Preez are not on the list, then I vote for Abdelatif Benazzi.

Suggested additions: Colin Meads(NZ), Frik Du Preez(SA), Olivier Merle(Fra) and Gordon Brown(Scot). Certainly all 4 of those should be ahead of Cockbain. Best ever? Pick one of McBride, Meads or Du Preez from the amateur ear, and Eales and Johnson (possibly Ian Jones as a 3rd option) from the modern era.

Nah, you look at our legends: -

JPR Williams
Gareth Edwards
Barry John
Phil Bennet
Mervyn Davies

etc. etc.

And most of them are backs, we've got a few great back rowers as well
