FORMER Queensland State of Origin star Dale Shearer was in hospital last night with life-threatening injuries after allegedly speeding away from police on Saturday.

A veteran of 26 games for the Maroons between 1985 and 1996, Shearer, 43, was airlifted to the Royal Brisbane Hospital after losing control of his Porsche at a roundabout on the Sunshine Motorway at Peregian Springs shortly after 11pm.

The car slammed into a power pole and then flipped, finishing up in a culvert.

Queensland Police said Shearer was flown to Brisbane with life-threatening head and chest injuries and remained in a critical condition in intensive care last night.

Senior Constable David Lenergan said Shearer had spotted a police car travelling in the opposite direction and allegedly accelerated to about 160km/h. The speed that Shearer was travelling at the time of the crash will also be investigated by police.

A hospital spokeswoman said todaythat Shearer remained in a critical but stable condition.
Police have taken a blood sample from Shearer to investigate whether alcohol played a role in the crash.

The accident comes a year after Shearer's wife Delyse died of cancer.

Former teammate and FOGS (Former Origin Greats) executive director Gene Miles said many within the Queensland rugby league community had been in touch offering their support for Shearer and his two teenage sons, Jackson and Jesse. "Rowdy was an icon up here - one of the real characters of our game, and there are a lot of concerned people out there hoping he can pull through," Miles said.

"It's been a really rough year for him, and now this. It's going to take all that character of his to pull through this and be there for his kids.

"All you can really do at the moment is offer your best wishes to his family, hope and pray that he gets through."

Shearer starred for Manly, Brisbane and the Gold Coast Seagulls during his long career.

It was in the representative arena that the freakishly talented utility back excelled, establishing himself as a key member of the Queensland sides that dominated interstate football in the late 1980s. Shearer scored 12 tries for the Maroons, and represented Australia in 20 Tests.[/b]

Terrible news for one of Queenslands greatest. Some of the tries he scored were astonishing. Hope he recovers asap.
