Fans Flood Field

As is custom here after a big win vs. a rival, a vastly superior team (an upset win), or winning a championship fans flood the playing field to celebrate with their players. There is usually no ill intentions towards the other team, so i was wondering what you guys think. Are you in favour of the fans flooding the field to celebrate with the rugby players after a champion crowning match, whether it be during the league season or the heineken cup (or other tournaments) throughout the rugby season?

How cool would it be to see the fans flooding the pitch at twickenham, stade de france, millenium stadium, murrayfield, croke park, or even stadio flamino after the respective home nation won the 6 nations clinching match at home?

Just like that, has to be a surreal experience for the players!

I remember a few years ago now Jonah Lomu saving some kid who had fallen during a pitch invasion after the game, the kid could have been trampled....not a good idea....no matter how 'cool' it looks there are serious safety issues involved with such things, despite no ill intention being involved...but then again, what is a few dead people if you can't have your freedom to do so?

England v Scotland 1977- Scots take over Wembley and when Scotland win absolutely mob the stadium, pretty cool...

Yeah I have to agree with Brodizzle. While I understand having such a communal feeling after a great win would be great; too many people die during crowd surges. I don't want to sound like some ****** teetotaler, and I enjoy being in a mob as much as the next guy, but the danger is too great, especially for lil' fellas.

There is also the added risk that in charged areas, people will take the opportunity to incite violence, especially in nations where race tensions are running high...

Then again, I could be overreacting.

Definetely not, its dangerous for everyone on the field. Also as someone already mentioned if kids fall over they would struggle to get back up and could be flattened and potentially killed. The time for pitch invasions in over.

How can we blame them?
It happens once a century.

happens after every final in croker

oh and i just want to post this off the topic a bit i suppose

Now there's a sight to behold, yeah I think it is a good thing to happen, the GAA thought it was a bit dangerous as well but that's absolute nonsense when you consider the spirit in which it is done. They tried to get rid of it by citing health and safety reasons (which is another load of ******** but don't get me started on that) and saw sense by seemingly turning a blind eye to it.

It's more of a spontaneous thing so a concerted effort to bring it into rugby or any other sport where it doesn't happen would seem a bit choreagraphed in my opinion.

I love the idea of it, and i love it when i see fans do it. Of course there could be some danger but to be honest ive never seen or heard of anyone getting killed in a field celebration.

We see ohio stadium unload on the field every now and then and ive yet to hear of a single case of someone getting killed or injured on the field. I think if people saw someone fall on the ground they'd help them up.

That must be quite the surreal experience for the players in the GAA final!!

Yeah alright mate, have you ever been in a mosh pit when a metal band is playing? It'll be like that, people pusshing, rushing to get on the pitch, if someone falls they aren't goign to stop everything and wait for the person to get up...there will be a thousand people behind them pushing into them. There is a reason that they don't allow people to do it in most places in the world, because injuries and on very rare occasions someone does actually lose thier life, and I think the possibility that serious injuries and even death, even if a one in a thousand chance isn't a risk worth taking...go celebrate with your mates at the pub after the game, that's the way it should be done...

As Pink once (almost) sang "...you better get this Charlie started".

He wanted to execute that little kid who ran on to hug Tim Howard after the Everton/Charlton game last year.

As you say it all depends on the nature of the 'invasion'.

At Stradey Park there isn't so much a flood of fans as a trickle of fans onto the pitch.

And most of those are just using it as a shortcut to the car park rather than running up to pat the players on the back.

I suppose in an important game it might happen, but then you probably can't fit enough people into Stradey to fill the pitch

Have YOU ever been in a mosh pit?

The first thing that happens when someone falls over is the mosh pit stops and the person is picked up.

It's really not as malicious as you are attempting to make it sound.. in all honesty i would say it isnt dangerous at all. As long as parents watch their kids im pretty sure grown adults can handle themselves, and its not like a stampede as you are trying to make it sound..

There are roughly 50,000+ fans on that field in the video above, not one injury or death was even reported. I know there were little kids out there celebrating with their heroes, it was a great experience and i would love to see others get to share in that joy in other sports!

I love that picture with tim howard by the way!! It was bullshit how they took that kid off escorted by police an **** like he was threatening or some ****!

I remember an NPC game in New Zealand when Counties played North Harbour after the game All Black lock Ian Jones got attacked while walking off the field through screaming fans. A big Islander thug did a flying head butt to Jones sending him reeling back into the fans, all caught on footage and shown on the evening news...

Dangerous for everyone

I personally want to kick Ian Jones in the testicles, although at times I suspect he doesn't have any.

And flooding the field is lame in College Football, they seem to do it every second week whenever they play at home, wow, you beat a crappy team ranked 80 places below you, call me when you win something.

Nah not really, they only do it when its a big win... like that OSU vs Mich game from 06 that was well deserved.. no?

I think it has very little to do with safety and all to do with money. Firstly, it makes insurance costs rise. If you allow people to go on the field there is a risk of injury no matter how insignificant. Secondly, it costs a lot of money to keep a professional playing field in good health as it is. It has to be basically a putting green for equal bounces everywhere and having thousands of people trample it, can bring no good. Imagine Millennium Stadium with it's already horrendous fields, after being trampled by 50,000 people. It's all about the green.

Pitch invasions aren't all that bad, I've been part of a few at the Cardiff Arms Park. It's a bit daft though, last season, I only remember one pitch invaision, and that was the last game of the season. This season, almost every match there's been one, but it's almost always only kids and teenagers (me being oen of them) and all we do is pat the players on the back and since my friend usually has a ball on him, we kick a few drop goals over the post, which is fun. But at least there's a fence at the Arms Park, there isn't one on Stradey (at least not on one of the stands anyway.

Apparently teh stewards aren't allowed to touch us - though some try to grab, and fail. I did pat one on teh back once and say 'You're doing a good job mate'

Cant really say its a saftey concern.

You get a few at Murrayfield now and again (although generally only a few hundred go on) but these people are often arrested!

take Glasgow games however, IF we were to achieve something then we would want to celebrate and with only 2500 of us a pitch invasion is safe as! and why then is a big game any different?

Its been mentioned above, in 1977 Scotland beat England 2-1 at Wembley (which happens an awful lot more than once a century BTW ;) ) and the scenes afterwards were absolutly extraordinary! (we even wrote a song about it! :D)

besides, if it isnt safe for stands to empty onto the pitch then most stadiums shouldnt have safety certificates! (since this is a vital part in many grounds evacuation plans)

Are you being serious?

Why do you think 80,000 fans might be more dangerous than 2,500? More people in the same space perhaps?

Pitch invasions shouldn't really be encouraged, but if they do occur they should be spontaneous actions which happen when people get caught up in the emotions of a moment. If you try and plan them it's just lame and pointless.
