New Zealand winger Hosea Gear says he may move overseas after missing selection for the All Blacks' 30-man squad for the Rugby World Cup.

This is the saddest thing about his ommision. Players like Toeava, Guildford and Dagg all easily have another RWC in them but this has really been Gear's only chance for a RWC in his life. To be honest, I think he'd do well to head over to a club like Leinster, Osprays or Toulouse where he can play some amazing running rugby for them, for plenty of cash. Really sad for him. If he does resign I'll be pleased, but I think in some ways it'd be much better for him and his family to play abroad.

It's a real shame. I think Gear was the most unlucky of all to miss selection. Naturally I hope he sticks around but if the money starts calling you can't blame him for want to take his options.

Maybe he'll follow in Rico's footsteps and go to Worcester :p

Him and Miles Benjamin could tear it up together

This is sad news though, as he is a bloody talented player - whichever club he decides to go to will be lucky to have him

Agree with the sentiments here, he's a great player and he'll tear up the opposition at any club he goes to. Would be nice to see him in the Premiership actually...

Pity that a quality player is looking to leave the S15 but you can't blame the man for looking at his options. Also, Good players (who havn't made the cut) leaving for the NH is in effect a good thing for our respective SH teams as it allows space to open up for youngsters to come in and get real valuable experience at the highest level (apart from tests of course). the big wheel turns..

You never know how it will turn out. The AB's still need to play one game. And if there is an injury he will make it to the squad in no time.
Still pity he didn't make it.

he should have been in the squad anyway. Jane's the best in the world, Guildford's earnt it on form, Muliaina's the best in the world, and Dagg's proven he's a class player.

What has Toeava done at Test level?

Hope Hosea comes to Europe and smashes it up. Nobody in England besides Bath has any money, so maybe he can go and kick Banahan out of the team. But I reckon Munster's the best option, provided they find some centres. A back 3 of Gear, Earls, Howlett is pretty tasty.

Depends,
I think in the Aviva a big name will get about what a big name in SH will get (i.e Dan Carter at Crusaders won't be getting any more than if he'd move to Leicester Tigers), but below that everyones on a bit more than down in the SH (so someone like Billy Twelvetrees who's recently out of the academy and not getting a massive amount of 1st XV games will be on more than a similar player in a Super XV side)
I believe they can get a bit more in the Magners (no salary cap, but players aren't on millions there) but in France they can get a lot more than they do down south

Cheers, I know this is OT, but it seem wierd to me that this is the case. Is there a reason? I would have thought the S15 clubs would have been able to match the 3 top NH leagues (aviva, Magners or T14).

Toeava has been very good at test level for the last 2-3 years - only injuries have prevented him from getting a lot more starts for the AB's. He had a great end of year tour last year (20 mins against Australia aside); by the end of the tour he was included in the top lineup vs Wales (and he had a huge game too). It was pretty clear by the end of last year he had overtaken Jane as the incumbent right wing. He was in phenomenal form for the Blues before injury (the form outside back of the whole competition in my mind), so there is no surprise that he is included in the squad.

Hosea Gear, like Toeava, had a great end of year tour. However he was very quiet during the Super Rugby season, and has been quiet in his chances for the AB's this year. The big problem Gear has is that his style of play doesn't suit the current AB's gameplan. It will be interesting to see where Gear goes - I'm still hoping he comes down to the Highlanders (as he has already had talks with Highlanders management), as it would give the Highlanders a very potent back-three for a change, with Hosea Gear, Kade Poki, and Ben Smith..

It all comes down to the support and how that flows through the game. the more fans tuning up to the games the more money in the pocket, the more people wanting to watch from home the bigger tv money and the more attactive teams are to sponser.....how many people in Europe compared to the SH?

Also, I know in NZ we have both the ITM cup and Super rugby and some people only support one or the other. i have southland fans who dont support the highlander for all kind of reasons and i wouldn't be surprised if there were little partchs of people like that throughout the country.

As for Gear, I really want him to come to the highlanders and if he had made the squad i think we had a good shout....now, i think he will go overseas and much like his brother Nz will not have seen the best of him

Our loss

It actually has very little to do with that.

Clubs in the England and France are privately funded. That means that while there is a salary cap in England, clubs can pay a lot for any one player. In France, teams can just pay silly amounts for any number of players. In New Zealand, Super Rugby teams don't make all that much, if anything, and they are all owned by the NZRU. Because there is no wealthy club owners who can buy players up, there is little chance of player retention.

Oh well if he goes he'll be missed by his former team and greatly welcomed by the team that picks him up.

Such a strong player, he deserves good money if he goes overseas as he will show why as soon as he's settled in.

I dunno, if you listen to what he says in the video, it doesn't actually sound a lot to me like he's definitely going overseas, as the media is making out. From that, I took it more as he's still weighing up his options (like he says), and given the **** going on with the Hurricanes, it was already well known that he was stalling on signing with them anyway, so he could be looking at changing Super 15 club just as much as going overseas.

In saying that, I still expect him to leave NZ, I just find the way the media has framed this story irksome.
