Henry calls for Super Rugby cap for players

The Rugby World Cup winning coach has suggested that a limited number of players should be restricted to playing three out of every four matches for their Super Rugby franchise.

Agreed for the most part. It is taxing on players, but that change should be to lesson the number of games. Super Rugby is still the top club/domestic type competition in NZ. We need our best players for Internationals, but that should come totally at the expense of our franchises. Players should be rested and rotated as their franchises see fit.

Players should not be rested at all. An All Blacks should be available to play ever All Black and Super 15 game. If that is too many matches, then make it a shorter season.

Not a lot different from what they already do in England. The PRL have a medical protocol limit of 32 games per player in a calendar year. If you look at the maximum potential games that a Premiership player could play in a year, its as follows

LV Cup Pools........................4
LV Cup playoffs....................2
Premiership Round-robin........22
Premiership playoffs..............2
Heineken/Amlin Cup Pools.......6
Heineken/Amlin Cup playoffs...3
Internationals (6N, AI, ST)....10 (maximum allowed by agreement with the PRL)
--------------------------------
TOTAL..............................49

So Premiership players are only allowed to play 32 out of 49 matches (or 65%)
Henry is asking that Super Rugby Players Play 12 out of 16 matches (or 75%)

But there is obviously a big difference between 16 matches and 49, especially in terms of player welfare. Current All Blacks pretty much miss all of the NPC as well.

The All Blacks and Springboks hardly play any matches in the domestic tournaments. For instance, Willem Alberts played only in the play offs for the Sharks in the Currie Cup. That's only 2 matches. Add the 17 matches in the Super 15, 4 in the Tri Nations and 7 at the RWC, makes a total of 30 matches in 2011.

That's when Alberts would have played ALL matches in the Super 15, Tri Nations and RWC making the final.

30 matches in 9 months...

I guess international clash with the domestic rugby at times anyway? Therefore an elite player could not possibly play in all 49 games?
