How misleading are stats?

I'm halfway into a night shift, have no work to do so nothing better than look up random rugby stats.......

Comparing Gloucester and Leicester and their playing styles, Gloucester being the more expansive team
Heres some season stats that don't fit the picture:
Tries scored: Glos 58, Tigers 67
Passes made: Glos 1953, Tigers 2352
Possesion kicked: Glos 603, Tigers 431
Runs: Glos 1493, Tigers 1862

Tigers also made more metres, conceded more penalties, more yellow cards and more turnovers.
It's a real surprise to see how much Gloucester kicked.

RE: How misleading are stats?

Stats tell the truth, they don't lie :)...It's just that they don't always tell the whole story.

Doesn't mean Gloucester aren't more expansive. A lot of Leicester tries are scored through forward oriented moves, and many of the passes could well be short offloads around the contact area.

Those stats don't include things like length of pass, who made the passes, which players carried that ball most, made the most metres etc.

Very true. Interestingly Saints missed the least tackles too. I suspect the number of runs made is telling Leicester made many more which would be expected given they like to dominate possesion and probably made more short hard yards runs.

Also not forgetting the leicsters foward will win them a lot of the possesion to have time to make those passes and their usual left to right game.
