Brilliant news for Ireland, horrible news for Leinster. I look forward to seeing him up skill people like Simon Zebo, Luke Marshall, Stuart Olding, Iain Henderson. He's a terrific skills coach.

wahey
let the rebuilding commence!

also does this mean he is taking the N.America tour?

And suddenly Ireland are 10x more worrying.

Wonder if Leinster might be interested in Conor O'Shea?

Leinster should appoint BOD to replace Schmidt.

One more year

MM do you know is Schmidt being allowed to build his own backroom staff? Would hoe so so he can bring in people around him who will help him bring his game-plan/style to Ireland.

They need to get rid of Kiss for sure, he was to close to Kidney and the backs weren't really outstanding under him also considering Schmindt is backs specialist.

Well. Good news for New Zealand. One more coach who can now get a look in for the NZ job in a few years. See how Hansen does till 2015, then we'll have a rich selection of Schmidt, Gatland, Hansen plus w/e SR coaches win stuff still then...

In general I think it's just a very good move for Ireland. Be excited to see how they play next year.

Well I know Axel is only 1 not contracted to national team. Of the rest I presume Gert Smal is safe as he was sitting behind our dugout in Montpellier so I doubt IRFU sent him there Saturday for fun. Kiss is a good knowledgable man but as you state he's a back specialist (although he may revert to defense at expense of Axel) but the issue is would he be a stale voice and 2 would he be ok been number 2 having missed out on job. I also wonder will the buyout of contracts be an issue

You forget Robbie Deans.

Not really what I wanted to hear it's not like Kidney was the only voice in the set up. Fresh ideas all around the players are needed. Kiss i'm just not a fan of.

You're very harsh on Kiss I think. As a specialist defense coach which he actually is he's top class. I have no problem with Schmidt bringing in his own people but neither do I have a problem with him keeping some on being under Schmidt's direction rather than Kidney's is something completely different.

Anyway the worst kept secret in Irish rugby is out and I'm delighted.

think it was the obvious choice to go for, and the right one. Schmit knows the Irish game, and the players. If he can avoid the injury nightmares that Kidney enjured towards the end of his reign he can build Ireland into a world force again. I think he'll add more spice and zip to the Irish attack like he did with Leinster, and he's got the attitude to never stop looking for ways to improve, which will also help.
Only challange he does have though is finding a long term captain. O' Driscoll's not going to around much longer and O'Connell is not gonna make it beyond the next world cup, if he stays fit. I think the captaincy looked a real burden on Heaslip in the Six nations, and the players didnt seem to gravitate towards him or trust him completely. He certainly wasnt at his best form.
Schmit has to pursaude Stephen Ferris to stay in Europe and not go to Japan. Ireland have missed him. also looking for O'Driscoll's successor in the 13 shirt wont be easy. I would go with Darren Cave after O'Driscoll decides to hang his boots, he desevers his chance, have him partering Luke Marshall in the centre, but will see.

Cave is a very solid all-round player, but I don't think he's capable of keeping the 13 shirt.
I wonder how Marshall would do at 13 and Olding at 12? I haven't been keeping up much with the younger players from the other provinces so I can't really comment on them, but it would be good to see that combination for Ulster definitely.

I wonder whether Schmidt will be as stupid as Kidney in the way he brings in young players. Kidney did it eventually but in completely the wrong times and way.

I also wonder whether Schmidt will unlike Kidney realise that Earls IS NOT BOD's successor. Kidney had his mind stuck on the idea since 2009 that Earls would be the 13 when BOD was out and when he retires and stuck to it, despite it becoming clear that he is not going to make it as a quality international 13 in the long term.

Little I've seen of Olding he looks like a good player, but no sure about international rugby for him yet, he needs to hold a spot in the number 1 ulster team before being considered for ireland. Cave deserves an oppurtuniny in the shirt, he's been waiting a while. And realistically they are not going to find a centre as good as Brian O'Driscoll anytime soon. no nation in the world, apart from arguably new zealand, has a centre as big a star as O'Driscoll has been and still is. He has been world class, a genuine complete all round genius of a rugby player that comes around every so often. At the moment Wesley Fofana with France is the only one i can think of with potential to get close to how good and complete O'Driscoll is as a centre.
Schmit does need to try and persuade BOD to stay another year, and give him the captaincy back for that year. I think him as leader and his stature as captain would be good for the younger guys coming into the team, and could stand them in good stead for their future of their learning.

I would not be utterly surprised if BOD did one more year, taking them neatly up to Jared Payne becoming IQ...

Thats where he needs to try and persuade O'Driscoll to stay on another year, cause I think the younger players will learn and develop into international players better with him as their leader, and with his stature. That's the mistake Kidney made in taking the captaincy off him. But you've also got the sympathise with the injuries kidney had to deal with in this years 6 nations.
Also I would have Darren Cave over Earls to replace O'Driscoll. Cave is not as flash, but he is hard running and a very solid defender. Earls' defence has always had question marks. But neither will be as good a player as O'Driscoll, few players in the world are
