The official draw for the 2011 ITM Cup has been released with New Zealand's new-look domestic competition set to kick-off on July 14 when Otago host North Harbour

The changed competition format sees to two tiers of sevens team clash in 13 rounds over eight weeks.

Teams are split into premiership and championship competitions, with Canterbury, Waikato, Auckland, Wellington, Taranaki, Bay of Plenty and Southland in the top tier.

Hawke's Bay, Counties Manukau, Northland, North Harbour, Tasman, Manawatu and Otago will contest the championship competition.

Both competitions will play a round robin of home and away matches. In addition, all 14 teams will play four cross-over matches - two home and two away - where premiership and championship teams meet.

There will be on semi-finals in 2011 because of the World Cup, but will return in 2012. The finals scheduled for September 3, a week before the rugby World Cup begins in New Zealand.

The seventh-placed team in the premiership is automatically relegated to the 2012 championship, while the winner of the championship is automatically promoted to the next year's premiership competition.

Ranfurly Shield holders Canterbury face their first challenge in the third round of the competition, when they host Southland.

Manawatu's bucketheads will celebrate their province's 125th anniversary with a home derby match against Hawke's Bay in the first round

to reduce the running costs for eah team i believe is the main driver.

I also heard Southland v. Otago will be the last game the Carisbrook which will be huge, but Otago Manawatu will be the first game the the FoBar which i doubt will be quite as big

Maybe because of the World Cup?

While a competition like the Currie Cup in South Africa can go on during the World Cup, the ITM Cup is not an option because it would seriously interfere with the World Cup being played in the same stadiums

Great!!! Tasman gets three games in Nelson where the crowds DO show up, and two games go to Blenheim, where, if they are lucky, a man walking his dog, a couple pushing a pram and few drunken feral tussock jumpers wandering home from Rocco's might stroll though the park by accident.

How the fvck is a struggling union like Tasman supposed to make a dollar when they keep scheduling matches to places where nobody is interested.

Go figure!

Tasman was a bad idea from the start, Nelson Bays were the ****!

my dad played for nelsen bays so i know im a bit bias but i would have to agree they should have left well enough alone

Well it looks like we're stuck with it now. Nelson, Golden Bay & Motueka (the three original sub-unions that amalgamated back in the day to become Nelson Bays) fall just short of the population criteria to be in the comp.

Tasman is one of the best supported teams per-capita when games are at Trafalgar Park. Nelson City has a pop of 60,000 and crowds of around 9000 - 10,000 are common. When was the last time Auckland, Wellington or Canterbury drew full houses for NPC matches?
