Looked like it could be a classic at half time.

Cipriani with some inspired play, but Tigers with most of the pressure. Then a great 5 min scrum on the Wasps line just before half time and Tigers scored wide out right.

Missed the first 15 mins of second half, when most of the points went on. But the main thing is that Cole, the Tigers tighthead, mullered Payne, the Wasps loosehead, who was yellowed on 36 mins for constant collapsing and came close to a red in the second half for the same thing. A star is born. Plus Youngs the Tigers scrumhalf looks excellent.

Cipriani is better than Flood, but he's playing with losers so it'll be difficult for him to make England selection.

Tigers top the table. And Sean Edwards is going to have roast prop for dinner this evening.

Tim Payne is NOT an international rugby player. He got f***ed over by Bell at Bath (where he got sent of for two scrummaging yellows), Hayman against Newcastle, and now Cole at Welford Road. He can't scrum for **** and can't even hold the ball when he's over the line. What the f*** is MJ thinking, seriously? There are some super looseheads around at the moment, namely Golding, Flatman and Mullan but he looks like he's going to stick with this twat of a prop. Most likely White will be alongside him instead of players like Wilson, Cole and Corbisiero who actually run round the pitch and contribute in open play.

Thought Cipriani had a super game, by the way, and Louis Deacon impressed also. Tuqiri put in his first effective performance of the season in my opinion.

Impressive attendance! 24,000 for a run of the mill GP game, not bad at all.

Missed the first half, and has to watch the second half without sound but it was cice to see Murphy and Staunton playing well for Leicester Irish, can't wait til Geordan comes back. I always cheer them on as well as Saints (although I feel dirty because Mite supports them ;) ) because of there Irish contingent, which is ironic considering there is a team called London Irish in the league.

Tim Payne dive in the corner and forgetting to ground the ball = facepalm, scoring would have been much easier! Astounding how anyone rates him, bad enough he plays for England but he was also called up to the Lions squad in the summer  Seriously, Tony Buckley is a better scrummager! :o

Did Tuqiri ground the ball for his first try? Maybe Tigers were lucky to get the BP, although they did deserve it.

Am I overestimating Cole?

Payne is the next Vickery.

Couple of odd stats from this match:

- From first kick off there were 2 mins of uninterrupted play with lots of phases and variation, which ended in a Wasps try. "That shut them up!"
- Ref blew for first penalty at 6m 25s, with several advantages given before then.
- After 15 mins of second half, Tigers had put in 1 tackle, Wasps 23.

Not many penalties from the breakdown, I think. Most came from the scrum, but that meant Tigers building the pressure with repeated resets close to the line. Good tension.

Ref was French. VG, although he did allow plenty of crooked throws. He practised the "I'm warning you" method on offside at the breakdown close in, but penalised defenders out wide for breaking the line. Is Venter right about English refs?

I wouldn't say that now. I've never believed French refs are any more lenient than English refs, just some refs allow a longer advantage. I don't think it's a national thing, it varies from individual to individual.

And Venter can **** off. Like his team would benefit from the referees encouraging open, expansive rugby. They'd probably be down near the other end of the table.

Venter had a half point in his rant - we've all been concerned about the standard of refereeing for a long time - but the problem is he didn't want to talk about English refs, he wanted to rand because he's a sore looser and big headded arsehole... Case point being he would have said something after Leeds' disallowed try vs Sarries earlier this year which cost them the match (or even the TMO's wrong decision against Saints), but he didn't. He chose to rant after a game when Sarries were given a lesson about forwards play and weren't good enough.

To me, he sounds like a man who's worried if he doesn't win everything he'll be out of a job (in a Chel$ki kind of way).

Anyway, just watched this again...<div class='quotetop'>QUOTE (ali12 @ Jan 9 2010, 05:32 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}></div>
Thought Cipriani had a super game,[/b]

His work for the try was excellent (as was the long rage penalty), but his decision making was utter cack. Goes to show that despite all the skill in the world, if they've not git a rugby brain there'll only ever be an average player against all but the worst of teams.

I saw bits of the Newcastle match Venter was complaining about - thought the yellow for Borthwick was spot on.

After 15 mins he was getting veeery slow ball. Impossible to shine.

Small things such as going for the lineout when they had a penalty in front of the posts - Points are difficult to come by on a good day at Welford Road, so to the easy ones down when you only have a 5 point lead is ridiculous. Smack of either over-confidence or idiocy tbh.

Only experience will bring that, people forget he's only 22.

He's about the same age Wilko was when he won the world cup - the only difference was Wilko had people like Catt outside him who made all the decisions.

Cipriani will either a) learn what to do when or B) move to a team where he has someone to do it for him
