Pick Super Rugby Squads

interesting no one is expecting any international players despite squads being allowed to sign two non-New Zealand/Pacific Islanders. While I wouldn't imagine all the teams meeting their quota, don't be surprised if a couple (particularly Argentinians) are lured over to fill spots which seem to be hard to fill such as hooker and lock.

NZ Super squads have been announced

Super 15 squads announced

The 32-strong 2011 Super 15 squads have been announced at Eden Park, with 40 new players picking up contracts.

The 2011 Super 15 squads have been announced at the newly opened South Stand at the redeveloped Eden Park.

The five Super 15 coaches - Pat Lam, Ian Foster, Mark Hammett, Todd Blackadder and Jamie Joseph - along with NZRU professional rugby manager Neil Sorenson were on hand to make the announcements.

The NZRU has dished out 160 fulltime contacts with squads expanded to 32-strong to accommodate the longer season in 2011. There are 40 new players picking up contracts for the first time, while 12 existing players have moved franchises. There are seven members of this year's New Zealand Under 20 world champion team that have been selected in the squads.

The Blues have looked in house to fill their squad. They have recruited speedster Sherwin Stowers from Counties Manukau, though the winger came through the grades in Auckland rugby before moving south. Experienced campaigners Daniel Braid and Brad Mika return after playing overseas, while Northland skipper Jared Payne comes back to the franchise after a couple of seasons with the Crusaders.

Stephen Brett and Alby Mathewson reunite at halfback and first-five, while promising young Auckland flyhalf Gareth Anscombe is a notable absentee from all squads.

The Chiefs have recruited experienced forwards Hayden Triggs, Scott Waldrom, former All Black lock Isaac Ross and the experienced former All Blacks skipper Tana Umaga.

Counties Manukau backrower Fritz Lee is rewarded after a stellar ITM Cup campaign, while Bay of Plenty hooker Daniel Perrin will provide cover for All Blacks Hika Elliott and Aled de Malmanche.

James McGoughan's long term back injury has ruled him out of contention though Nathan White, Ben Afeaki, Ben May, Toby Smith and Sona Taumalolo should cover the loss of the Bay of Plenty prop.

Taniela Moa is one of three halfbacks alongside Waikato pair Brendon Leonard and Tawera Kerr-Barlow.

The Hurricanes will look to Tyson Keats and Chris Eaton to fill the void left by injured All Blacks halfback Piri Weepu early in the season.

Julian Savea, Charlie Ngatai, Mark Reddish, Michael Bent and Laurence Corlett all make their Super rugby debuts this season but surprisingly there is no space for promising first five Lima Sopoaga, who has moved to the Highlanders.

Veteran former All Blacks number eight Rodney So'oialo keeps his contract, while Waikato openside Jack Lam will make his Super rugby debut in Hurricanes colours.

The Crusaders have predictably stuck largely within their franchise encatchment area with rookies Tom Marshall, Luke Romano, Tyler Bleyendaal, Willi Heinz, Andrew Olorenshaw, Matt Todd and Joe Wheeler all picking up contracts from Canterbury or Tasman.

Young Southland prop Nick Barrett, veteran hooker David Hall, first five Matt Berquist and injured All Blacks wing/fullback Israel Dagg move up from the Highlanders.

The most movement comes with the Highlanders, who have former All Blacks blindside flanker Jamie Joseph coaching them this season.

The southern franchise has recruited well, picking up Canterbury first five Colin Slade, Manawatu halfback Aaron Smith and flanker Nick Crosswell, promising Wellington first five Lima Sopoaga, Lions midfield back Shaun Treeby, tough Taranaki blindside Jarrad Hoeata, impressive Canterbury number eight Nasi Manu, electric Canterbury winger Telusa Veainu, Counties Manukau midfield back Siale Piutau and sevens star Kurt Baker from Taranaki.

Southland openside John Hardie and promising hooker Brayden Mitchell get their first Super rugby contracts as well.

The most obvious players to miss contracts were Anscombe and promising Taranaki back Beauden Barrett

Good squads, nowhere near as many surprises as last year due to the new contracting laws.

No foreign players... Well, outside maybe a couple of Pacifics?

good squads - like it how each squad has a very good option for 10, over the last few years only the chiefs & crucaders have been served well by their first-fives. But each squad now has a potential All Black 10.

That and the coaching changers are the big points of interest for me. hamment for the canes and Joseph for the landers.

So Thompson stuck with the highlanders after all, good news for them.

As for the chiefs squad, I like it a lot. Though I'm gutted James McGoughan is out - I think he has a big future and I really wasn't impressed with Taumalolo this year and Ben May has some work to do - Toby Smith made him look like a monkey in ITM cup.

Tana will be there to take young Willison under his wing. Also shame to see Stowers go to the blues.

Good to see Jack Lam got a contract. Though I wonder how he will fit in down in the land of the designer tatoo & Hair cut clad twitterers.

highlanders should have a lot of confidence with a new coach getting Colin Slade and retaining Thompson & Cowan. They have the makings of an awesome forward pack and a backline that though lacking Dagg which will be a HUGE loss, still has the potential to do really well.

Key new highlanders
Slade - At last a classy 10 with real cred.
Tuineau - This dude is huge, look forward to seeing him in super footy
Treeby - Classy signing though a bit on the small side.
Manu - One of the standout players in this ITM cup
Veainu - This guy has huge potential, maybe even All Black potential IMO.
Crosswell - Big player for the turbos, seemed to be injured for a lot of the ITM cup. Turbo's forwards seem to be a great unit and it would be good for some of that to rub off on the highlanders.
Baker - pure class 7's player and ITM cup player. Can he make the next step up?

Tuineau and Manu are not new Highlanders.

I'm a bit surprised to see that Kade Poki and George Pisi didn't get selected.

Good balanced squad and judging from their improvement from last 2 seasons, will be a force in new s15 format.

Andrew Shaw won't be in the Reds, he lost his contract.

The Sharks

1.Beast/John Smit
2.Bismark du Plessis/Craig Burden/Kyle Cooper
3.Jannie du Plessis/Eugene van Staden/Wiehahn Herbst
4.Steven Sykes/Gerhard Mostert
5.Ross Skeate/Alaister Hargreaves
6.Keegan Daniel/Jacques Botes
7.Jean Deysel/Ojiambo/Jody Jenneker
8.Willem Alberts/Ryan Kankowski
9.Charl Mcloed/Conrad Hoffman/Ross Cronje
10.Patrick Lambie/Jacques Louis Potgieter
11.Jp Pieterson/Lwazi Mvovo
12.Meyer Bosman
13.Adrian Jacobs/Stefan Terblanche
14.Odwa Ndungane/Luzuko Vulindlu
15.Louis Ludik

You forgot Riaan Swanepoel ;)

Didn't forget...i just don't rate him at this level...he is just average, just like alaister hargreaves. Never really rated those 2. Riaan will be good for vodacom cup and hargreaves has his moments(line out), but i don't think i will ever be happy seeing him in The Sharks starting line up. Great to see some Sharks on this site BTW...spread the good news...Sharks forever.

So you rate Skeate higher than Hargreaves? And Alberts a better 8-man than Kankowski? I guess we don't agree on that then ;)

Smit as a prop is just average and should retire. This would be my team:

1. Mtawarira
2. B. du Plessis
3. J. du Plessis
4. Hargreaves
5. Sykes
6. Daniel
7. Alberts
8. Kankowski
9. McLeod
10. Lambie
11. Mvovo
12. Bosman
13. Terblanche
14. Pietersen
15. Ludik

16. Burden
17. van Staden
18. Mostert
19. Deysel
20. Hoffmann
21. Adi Jacobs
22. Odwa Ndungane

I think Skeate is the South African Chabal. His appearance is 90% of the reason he is in a top team. Mostert is a big up and comer in the Sharks team. Hargreaves had a magnificent Currie Cup resulting in a Bok squad spot. We have some big talents coming with Herbst, Redelinghuys, Piet Lindique and Wynand Pienaar. The question is though if they can really make it worth the wait or if they will fall short like Rhodes and Cilliers.

14.Odwa Ndungane/Luzuko Vulindlu

Yaas, Daniel Ojiambo is a future legend, and whilst we are talking about him, I would have him above Vulindlu and Ndungane any day (btw I think Mvovo/Pietersen should play 11/14 respectively)

Deysel is even better than Alberts when it comes to ball carrying and Alberts is too good and consistent to have on the bench. Kanko can have his ups and downs depending on weather conditions and performance of the tight 5. Maybe on the heavier fields Alberts will be the better option at 8...otherwise Alberts can make an impact off the bench as he did for the Boks on tour...around 100 min of rugby and 4 tries off the bench...well done BIG VIC.

I really like Cilliers and Rhodes...went to school with them. Not too worried Rhodes is gone, but patty still has the goods to play 4 us...pity. Also i put John at 1, because there is a lot of unconfirmed news that Beast will be playing for The Lions, but i really hope he stays. www.sharksworld.co.za ...the best place to go for the latest confirmed and unconfirmed news about The Sharks. oh...also swop sykes and hargreaves...sykes is our bakkies and hargreaves the line out specialist. 4.sykes 5.hargreaves.
