Pointless Christmas gear

So, the festive season is fast approaching. I see you, Teh Mite, beavering away on facebook, contemplating putting up your Christmas tree!

I love Christmas, but how much pointless stuff gets wheeled out?

- Christmas pudding. It's horrible. I dislike it hugely! It always gets out-custarded. My dad makes a lot of effort in making on every year but I just don't like them! The only way I can cope is with a lashing of custard!

- Crackers. Pointless. And no, it's not because I can't win the pull! I don't see the point in the nasty, burnt smell and brittle paper hats.

- Top Gear DVDs. RRP of £16 at Christmas, £6.99 the day after!

Come on TRF, get stuck into this!

I suddenly realise why my parents never let me decorate the tree...

It looks ace.

Once I get this blasted house move sorted out I am looking forward to being able to have my own Christmas tree for the first time in 3 years!

Mite please tell me that's an old photo! Don't understand putting up a christmas tree untill mid December.

Top Gear really are cashing in this Christmas. There's all kinds of junk you can buy, from Stig shampoo to board games.

Agree with the Christmas pudding St. Helens, horrible stuff, as is Christmas cake. Best bit about Christmas is the dinner though, especially propper home made sausage meat stuffing.

Does anyone else think that turkey is too dry?[/b]

Yeah, don't like it. We have one evry bloomin' year.

Not a fan of Christmas Pud either.

Don't like the fact they start Christmas ads in October, once its the 23rd Nov (the day after my birthady) then it's fine to show as many ads as you bloomin well want.

Okay, I love Christmas.
In the US the Holiday Season officially started yesterday with Thanksgiving. In my family, as a lot in the US, the tree gets put up right around this time (growing up it was always the friday after). We set ours up last week, because we knew this week would be super busy for my wife as she's a retail manager and today, "Black Friday" is the biggest shopping day of the year in the US.
I know a lot of these things seem useless, but the tradition, however pointless sometimes, and the symbolism is worth it all. From a secular perspective it is a season of giving, loving, sharing, family, and fun. From a religious perspective there is all the symbolism of Christ, redemption, salvation, giving, compassion and rejoicing.
While you may not like the pudding and the crackers, those things mean something to someone in your family. My suggestion is that you just enjoy the stupid smile on someones face as they pop that cracker and read that silly joke. We don't do Christmas Crackers in the US, but I've done them the last 8 Christmases of my life because of my wife. I love them.
Now the overcommercialization and exploitation of the holiday...that's a topic to debate.

I used to be a total cynic at Christmas but I have two young kids now (3.5 and 1.5) and the eldest is absolutely mad into it. I have to say I love watching her reaction on Christmas morning, and listening to her waffle on about how Santa does this, and Santa does that.

If your having problems getting into Christmas have your self some babies. May well ruin the other 364 days of the year, but brightens up the important one.

Oh, and why we hear Christmas adds literally the day after Halloween?

That's a topic within itself Nate, absolutely. Don't get me wrong I adore Christmas, it's my favourite time of the year, get to see family, friends, eat in excess and all that. There are however some bug bears that are unavoidable. Such as After Eights. *shudders*

The disappointment of opening the Roses tin and seeing all of the caramel/toffee ones have gone :(

That being high up the list. Being left with green triangles and hazlenut whirls are clearly totally unacceptable.

God no. I can eat box after box of them. Yum.

Ahhh the acceptance of knowing your the only one capable of eating 15 strawberry creams in a row. Its a tough job but someone has to look after the rest of the family!

Okay another one I do hate. The release of super huge quality street sweets as a stand alone bar in shops! Hate that.

I don't mind the green triangles. It's the coconut ones that I hate being left with.

Bucks Fizz... Why the f*** did somebody think mixing Orange Juice with Champagne would be a good idea?

Getting woken up early by my f**king sister to open presents they are there they are not going anywhere please give me at least 1 or 2 hours more sleep.

I figured out quite early in my life that those Santa's in the malls were fong kong. Fake beard, pillow for a belly and never f*cking having what I wanted: A Natal Sharks ball with Andre Joubert's signature on it. Plus NO houses on east coast have chimneys, it's hot as hell here. The commercialised TV version of Christmas didn't really influence us since we have summer here during the festive season. Most Christmas days were either spent in pool, at the beach or at the boat club.
