Ref David Rose getting done for fraud...

How bizarre.

*cue "fraud through impersonating a ref" jokes*

Telegraph reports..............The RFU has suspended referee David Rose and launched an internal investigation after the Plymouth official appeared before the city's Magistrates Court on Monday charged with two counts of fraud by false representation.
It is alleged that between Feb 20 and April 19, Rose, 50, dishonestly made a false representation in failing to disclose he was working as a self-employed rugby referee and in receipt of income while claiming job seeker's allowance.
The court heard that the charges involved fraudulent claims amounted to £700. No pleas were taken and magistrates adjourned the case until Dec 2.

Well, its not as straightforward as some people think.

Mr Rose was made redundant by RFU in December last year, and so was out of work early in 2013.

In May he was appointed to an RFU Regional Delivery Manager's position (an unpaid one AFAIK).

As a Premiership Referee he gets a match fee and travel expenses. Neither of these would cover his costs of being a referee at that level, so he would be financially better off not refereeing at all.

If the DWP see this as being self-employed then someone on their staff has probably got a burr up their arse.

Slightly off topic, but what are the costs of being a referee? All I can think of are travelling and the cost of gym etc. to keep fit enough to ref at the top level.

Accommodation if a match is unreasonably late and a long way from his home.

Not sure of Rose has ever refereed HC, but if he has in France or Ireland, then accomodation is definitely an expense.

As someone who has had far too much experience with dealing with that lot than I like to admit, yes a lot of their staff do
