Hookers are a variable group. They need to be squat and built enough to take a lot of weight and to throw some around in the scrum, but I can't think of another position in the pack which inhabits so many different builds and roles on the field. You've got the hooker that used to play center and plays like an extra back. The hooker which wants to be a 7 and helps out with the breakdown. The hooker which likes to throw themselves around the field like a 6, making numerous tackles. There's the one which plays a little like a prop and takes on the grunt work of the tight. etc.
Scrum engagement rules will change next season, and if it sees a return to hooking, then I expect hookers to get away with being smaller than they are now. It may even be an advantage.
