Schilling says Phillies are on his list if he leaves Sox

BOSTON - If the Boston Red Sox don't re-sign Curt Schilling in the off-season, the pitcher would be open to returning to the Phillies.
"Absolutely, they'd be on a short list if it doesn't work out here," Schilling said before Game 1 of the American League Championship Series last night at Fenway Park.

Schilling, who will turn 41 next month, made it clear that staying with Boston was his first choice. The Red Sox have not decided whether they will try to re-sign Schilling, whose salary is $13 million this season, or build around younger arms.

If Schilling becomes a free agent, he said he would contact several contending teams for whom he'd like to pitch. The Phillies have discussed the possibility of signing the righthander. Schilling indicated that, at this point, he is thinking only about pitching next season and that he would be open to a one-year contract. That could increase the Phillies' interest.

Schilling won 101 games for the Phils from 1992 to 2000 and pitched on the 1993 team that went to the World Series.

He will pitch Game 2 of the AL Championship Series for Boston tonight.
