As someone who only delves a little into LinkedIn and still read a daily newspaper I don't fully understand the significance of the PMs early morning statement.
Any wiser members here on TRF able to fill in the gaps of my significant ignorance that seems to have the full focus of Starmer, and by default I guess all the Govt ministers?
My children are all far too old now, but I have young grandchildren , both under 5 and am intrigued to learn how this new legislation might benefit them.

I think I'll need to read up a bit more before I can take a view.

Thanks

It’s not about protecting the kids. It’s all a ploy to get the stupid labour digital ID going.

Everyone will have to prove they are not 16, so have to register ID checks in some way.

I hate this government so much. Self serving scum.

How does a smart phone or iPad know you are U16?
Maybe parents should only buy basic phones for their U16s, and if they allow them more sophsticated handsets then the parent is prosecuted.

Im conflicted, the damage social media has done to society, and children is massive, i dont think anyone understands the scope fully.

The likes of Zuckerberg and Musk are literal bond villains, but are celebreated depending on their political stance at any one time.

At the same time your absolutely right, thisnis nothing more than 'to save the children everyone needs to signnup to digital ID'.

I get the argument for digital ID, we already have passports and drivers licenses, and with an increasing population of unknowns a database would be usefull, i just dont trust thisnor any government tonuse it responsibly.

I already work with 16 year olds who drink, smoke, take drugs and comit every crime imaginable with ease, soni just dont think making kids use a VPN to get on insta is a good enough pay off for the digital ID card.

Agreed. Social media has brain rotted people into believing a whole range of conspiracy theories, like, I dunno, the Kalergi Plan. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha

Maybe Starmer , a massive fan of all things EU, might do well to poll the UK youngsters.
This report on the EU engagement with young citizen asking their opinions about Social Media shows that the older generations do not have a clue about how the target generations for potential bans really feel and think.

Social media positive for teens - Survey

It's good to read up across a spectrum of opinions and arguments before jumping to conclusions I find.

Too many folks become entrenched in historical data and don't try to evaluate opinions of others. In this case, parents don't have a clue about what their children think - they just wish to impose their dogma and doctrine.

Interesting, 6 hours per day screen time on weekends, 4.5 on schooldays...

Lets ignore the fact that 13 year olds and 18 year olds are not the same, at all, and juat focus on the screen time alone.

If a child gets out of bed at 8, goes to school for 9, returns home at 4, then the average 13 year old gets in, gets onto a screen, looks up to eat, and then goes to bed. AVERAGE!!!!!

Thats addiction, if any child does anything outside of the basics to survive for an average of 4.5 hours a day weekdays and 6 hours weekends they have an obsession to that thing, forget screens.

I work with teens and addiction, drug and alcohol services, and i regularly have 16 and 17 year olds swear blind their drug use is a help to them! I have numerous teens who drink 8 to 10 energy drinks per day, 100% of them claim its helpfull!

Im not saying social media is the only contributer to mental health issues, but its the prime conductor of it. Id go further, and say the mobile phone has provided too much at an instant to mankind, whether thats wealth of knowledge, ordering food, negative communications, and access to advertising...

That's aview from your perspective that you wish to impose on the younger generation. By which references to do judge that you know better than a young person?
Do you live in their shoes?
Do they welcome your intervention in their lives or is it imposed on them by some Local Authority / Govt Dept?

Just inquisitive

Absolutely, i think its fair to say i know better than most young people in the sense that drinking 10 cans of monster energy drink is bad for them, smoking 6 spliffs and going into a K hole is bad for them, selling their bodies for sex at 14 yrs is bad for them, and spending 6 hours a day on social media is bad for them...

I dont care about them disagreeing with me, because they are wrong, it has been evidenced over and over.
