15 red lifted S B Williams' feet in the tackle
Proof?Key for the game for me was how the ref ruled the reds at the breakdown. The reds attack the breakdown, they win a lot of ball and they also break a lot of rules and how the result goes really depends on how the ref rules it. last week they had a ref that enforced the rules this week they had a ref that basically gave them almost a free pass at the breakdown and did not call players off their feet or not supporting their weight.
You know that the tackler and the tackler assist is suppose to give the tackled person a chance to place the ball first. The other problem I had with the refing is there were times a reds player attacked the ball and won it then a chiefs player on their feet would grab him and hold the ball stopping him from getting it back surely creating a maul situation then the ref would penalize the chiefs for holding on the ground? That didn't make any sense, the tackled player released the ball and the reds player got it, so what's there to penalize? Play on.
15.4 THE TACKLER
(a) When a player tackles an opponent and they both go to ground, the tackler mustimmediately release the tackled player.
Sanction: Penalty kick
15.6 OTHER PLAYERS
(c) Players in opposition to the ball carrier who remain on their feet who bring the ball carrier to ground so that the player is tackled must release the ball and the ball carrier. Those players may then play the ball providing they are on their feet and do so from behind the ball and from directly behind the tackled player or a tackler closest to those players’ goal line.
Sanction: Penalty kick
AgainYeah the key line there is 'and they both go to ground'. The Reds player steals the ball and is then grabbed by a Chiefs player, who is then penalised for not releasing the tackled player. As the Reds player had to be on his feet when he stole the ball, and is never brought to ground otherwise, it should be a maul.
There was quite a lot of infringing from the Reds. Gill was good for the most part, though there was the odd occasion where he should've been pinged. I was watching Brussouw in the World Cup last year, and I get the feeling that neither of these two actually know the rules, as they seem to always infringe when they're the ones making the tackle AND attempting to steal the ball. They're great fetchers though. Beau Robinson off the bench was infringing all the time once he got on the pitch though - it was ridiculous. Leading up to the Red's drop goal there were three times where Reds players should have been penalised. Like Larksea said, I think Lawrence did a better job of policing the breakdowns than Joubert(?) did.
C'est la vie.
