SuperRugby: Reds v Chiefs. 13/05/2012

I can't help wonder how things might've turned out if Morahan had been sent to the sin bin, though to be fair I do have to say that the Chiefs' game wasn't up to their standard.

I don't think the player should've been carded, but Reds were constantly infringing at the ruck to the point where it was beyond blatant. Probably one of the worst refereeing performances I've seen this season... Sigh...

Both teams played well, but i think Will Genia set the pace and played very well. Higher score than I expected. Shows how close these teams are, I think any team can beat any team on a good day. Well played Reds.

Now the Bulls are on top!!!!! Whoop Whoop

If I didn't know any better, I'd say the ref was intentionally ignoring the Red's cheating at the breakdown, just so the Bulls could go ahead.

:p Just kidding, by the way, in case anyone wasn't sure.

This is definitely the week of upsets

Lol, I agree this was not the best ref ever, but most of his mistakes were at the scrums, but I doubt he ever was in a scrum. He missed some calls at the breakdown but to both sides, I don't think he was one-eyed. But should have been better, especially at this level of rugby

Great game, Genia bringing back memories of the final last year with his try. Ioane can't seem to get into a game, any game. His hard straight-line running would've been lethal against such a fractured defensive line like today, evidenced by the few times he did get his hands on the ball.

Good crowd too.

I expected the chiefs to lose this week but they played better than I thought, they played better than they have done for the last two weeks or more. Both teams scored some amazing tries so in that regard it was an entertaining game though the refereeing made me furious. Mostly in the first half there was a patch in the game where the chiefs got nailed for a crook lineout throw that was straight a knock on that wasn't a knock on a scrum penalty where the ref had no idea what happened (Tamafuna asked the ref what it was for and the ref said "I don't know, take a guess" or something like that. The result was the game was even thanks to the ref during a time where the chiefs should have been dominating. The chiefs had the reds on the rack just prior, players taking knees, digby was bent over and he hadn't even been in the game. Then that penalty before half time which the reds eventually scored a try from, questionable and unnecessary. The way I see it the chiefs should have had a 14+ point lead at half time.

Then there was the tip tackle - should have been a yellow card incident. This was refereeing amiture hour at it's best. The assistant was right there and put his flag out straight away but failed to get a number? Who ever that official was should find another carrier - that would have to be top 5 the worst piece of officiating I've seen in 12 or so years watching regular super rugby. he obviously doesn't take his job seriously.

It wasn't too bad a tackle but it was still an instant yellow card and Morahan who should have gone went on to make at least two try saving tackles when he should have been off the field.

Got to hand it to the Reds though, they were very impressive. I thought they were last week to getting so close to the crusaders, that try just after half time was superb. They came out and played that 2nd half like a final - which basically every game is for them because just one loss now could mean they don't make the playoffs. And Mike Harris kicking for goal was superb, he will surely make the national squad and it will be a big loss for NZ - blues management and selectors should be looking at themselves and saying that's "another" one we got wrong... Sucks having the most player talent for maybe any region in the world and not having the right people in the right places to make sure the best are identified before rival unions get their fill.

Key for the game for me was how the ref ruled the reds at the breakdown. The reds attack the breakdown, they win a lot of ball and they also break a lot of rules and how the result goes really depends on how the ref rules it. last week they had a ref that enforced the rules this week they had a ref that basically gave them almost a free pass at the breakdown and did not call players off their feet or not supporting their weight.

The other problem I had with the refing is there were times a reds player attacked the ball and won it then a chiefs player on their feet would grab him and hold the ball stopping him from getting it back surely creating a maul situation then the ref would penalize the chiefs for holding on the ground? That didn't make any sense, the tackled player released the ball and the reds player got it, so what's there to penalize? Play on.

On another note I hope kahui is ok, another shoulder problem. Such a shame he's had well over a year now I think without any real injury problem bar a pretty minor hammy problem for a couple of weeks during the world cup. I hope it's not serious, he's been vital for the chiefs and he will be missed at the All Blacks as well.

Proof?

You know that the tackler and the tackler assist is suppose to give the tackled person a chance to place the ball first.

15.4 THE TACKLER
(a) When a player tackles an opponent and they both go to ground, the tackler mustimmediately release the tackled player.
Sanction: Penalty kick

15.6 OTHER PLAYERS
(c) Players in opposition to the ball carrier who remain on their feet who bring the ball carrier to ground so that the player is tackled must release the ball and the ball carrier. Those players may then play the ball providing they are on their feet and do so from behind the ball and from directly behind the tackled player or a tackler closest to those players’ goal line.
Sanction: Penalty kick

Yeah the key line there is 'and they both go to ground'. The Reds player steals the ball and is then grabbed by a Chiefs player, who is then penalised for not releasing the tackled player. As the Reds player had to be on his feet when he stole the ball, and is never brought to ground otherwise, it should be a maul.

There was quite a lot of infringing from the Reds. Gill was good for the most part, though there was the odd occasion where he should've been pinged. I was watching Brussouw in the World Cup last year, and I get the feeling that neither of these two actually know the rules, as they seem to always infringe when they're the ones making the tackle AND attempting to steal the ball. They're great fetchers though. Beau Robinson off the bench was infringing all the time once he got on the pitch though - it was ridiculous. Leading up to the Red's drop goal there were three times where Reds players should have been penalised. Like Larksea said, I think Lawrence did a better job of policing the breakdowns than Joubert(?) did.

C'est la vie.

Again

16.1 FORMING A RUCK
(a) Where can a ruck take place. A ruck can take place only in the field of play.
(b) How can a ruck form. Players are on their feet. At least one player must be in physical contact with an opponent. The ball must be on the ground. If the ball is off the ground for any reason, the ruck is not formed.

Pointing out the specific incident will help E.G Time in the match . Bryce was right and refereed the game perfectly within the laws last week so did the referee this week.
