Warm up matches

Sharks:

Sharks team to face the Leopards (line-up TBA)

15. Riaan Viljoen 14. Odwa Ndungane 13. Tim Whitehead 12. Francois Steyn (Captain) 11. Lwazi Mvovo 10. Patrick Lambie 9. Charl McLeod 8. Lubabalo Mtembu 7. Jean Deysel 6. Jacques Botes 5. Franco van der Merwe 4. Pieter-Steph du Toit 3. Wiehahn Herbst 2. Kyle Cooper 1. Allan Dell

Substitutes:16. Craig Burden 17. Tendai Mtawarira 18. Jandre Marais 19. Anton Bresler 20. Keegan Daniel 21. Cobus Reinach 22. Meyer Bosman 23. Paul Jordaan 24. Louis Ludik

Pretty much full strength backline with Ludik the only sure starter at fullback not playing. Cases could be made that Reinach and Jordaan should start a serious match as well I suppose. Forward pack is a bit more experimental but considering Bismarck is out its still pretty good with experience provided by veterans Deysel, Botes and F vd Merwe.

I'm very keen to see PS du Toit play and also how well Dell goes. The Leopards probably don't stand much of a chance but they should scrum well enough for this young front row to consider it a test. With Du Toit, VdMerwe, Bresler and Marias I think it's safe to say the Sharks have the best depth in quality at lock in SA. Something I wouldn't have considered possible less than 2 years ago.

So are they resting Willem Alberts and Kankowski and Marcell Coetzee for the next warm-up game??

AT first when you look at that squad, you think, Why 2 locks on the bench and only one loose forward, then I remember that both Franco and PSD can also play flanker. Good backline though...

I suppose those guys and Jannie are getting a bit of a rest. Probably a good idea if you consider the amount of games they played for the Bokke as well last year. Not sure what the deal is with Kanko though. He probably had enough game time in Japan if I were to guess.

Yeah, PS du Toit has played blind side flank for the most part in age grade as far as I understand it.

I wonder whether the Bulls and Cheetahs are going to bring out the big guns for their match to give everyone a few minutes. I've read that Juan Smith will again only play a 1/2h or so. Bok captain if he hits form? I certainly don't think JdV did very well last year. J Smith is a few months younger than JdV so I can't see why he couldn't be an option if he were good enough to warrant inclusion. He does add a lot of grunt and even after coming back from being injured for 2 years he tackled Vermeulen like he has probably never been tackled before LOL.

No excuses this time for us; at home and all but full strength (JdJ, Burger, Liebenberg, Ntubeni not considered due to injury while we wait for Grant and Jantjies to return from Japan and leave). Hope Howard gets some time.

Some of the bigger names return to the fold for the Bulls (hope them dropping Serfontein from this line-up doesn't mean he's doomed to the sidelines this season) while the Cheetahs are also backing their best except for Goosen and Oosthuizen still not being match fit while Brussow is out injured yet.

Man that looks like a pretty good Bulls team, hopefully the rugby will be also very good.

The Bulls are having a golf day in Polokwane on Sunday after the game, where anyone can play alongside them. there are 30 4-balls and they have all been booked in 1 day's time.

You could swear that it's like a big final or something in this town. people are already driving around with their Bulls flags on their cars. Posters everywhere, yet it's not a game that will show on Supersport...

Does anyone think that the Kings are the ones deserving to be in SuperRugby more than the Lions? That could be a sterile one-way debate :).

What a pointless pre season match :P

Yeah and here's another one;

Stormers beating the Boland 57 - 0. We always have a match with the Boland though with them being our only 'feeder' union and at least getting some money out of this match.

Tries: Jaco Taute, Gio Aplon (2), Jean de Villiers, Andries Bekker, Siya Kolisi (3), Joe Pietersen
Con: Kurt Coleman, Pietersen (5)

I don't think anyone who's not eating from the plate of Cheeky Watson would think the Kings deserve their spot based on anything other than the political BS of 'developing rugby in the region'.

The Bulls beat the Cheetahs 32-10 in a very dominant display.

I was at the game and things doesn't look good for the Cheetahs. they were nearly at full strength with only Goosen and Brussow and Coenie absent from the team to injury. they looked hopeless. their backline was terrible.

the Bulls should've won a lot further than what the scoreline shows as they botched 4 tries in the first half. Mostly handling errors, which was expected from a pre-season game.

Man of the Match was Francois Hougaard. He made Piet van Zyl and Sarel Pretorius look like schoolkids. Especially Sarel, which he stepped, hand-off and rushed past on numerous occasions.

Francois Venter was another stand-out player. he's really growing into a formidable centre, his defence was immense, tackling guys backwards and then stealing the ball on the ground.

Pierre Spies is slowly showing signs of his old self, running straight, making breaks, running like a wing. It was so exciting to see the big guy run with the ball again.

Dewald Potgieter and Jacques Potgieter were menaces at the breakdowns and Jacques made some telling hits, he and Juan Smith had a minor altercation late in the game when Juan took offense to one such smash...

I'm now really looking forward to the start of the campaign after seeing my Bulls playing some running enterprising rugby. Morne Steyn has found his accuracy again and even landed a 56-meter bomb. Wynand Olivier also made a late appearance and he looked very sharp indeed.

The Warm-up match beforehand was between the Limpopo Bulls and a Pretoria Bulls invitational team. Which the pretoria side won 87-5!! the match was stopped 12 minutes before time as the Limpopo Bulls decided to rather play the man instead of the ball. Jan Serfontein was a menace, and was part in a scuffle with the Limpopo guys. luckily Jan didn't come off second best.

Bulls vs Stormers at Loftus first off is gonna be MASSIVE! Bulls have looked the more impressive pre-season but that counts for very little once things are truly underway.

I certainly believe the Bulls are going to surprise a few teams (although they did end 6th on the log last yar so would it really be a surprise?). Just hoping its not us to start off with.

Ha!! I hope we beat you guys properly! You have had good results against us at Loftus the last couple of times you were there... It's time this changed.
