It's something I always think about.

What if you could be a very young billionaire who could immediately within a few years create the infrastructure, buy the coaches, the know how, etc...in a project to make one nation good at Rugby, which would spread throughout decade upon decade - what nation would you pick that isn't already Tier 1 or Tier 2 ?
It could be for physical attributes you think would match Rugby, or an intellectual attribute; anything that makes you curious and think that one particular people could be good at Rugby.
Of course, anyone can be good if trained properly but...let's just entertain the idea, it's fun.

* I have a soft spot for the Germans. My dad always tells me as half a joke half serious: "ah, if the Germans played my son, you would see !..."

They could produce powerful forwards, able backs why not, and they'd play a very technical style probably as little as I know/care about football I know they play a technically proficient, organized, polished style.

It would be really cool to see them take the sport seriously maybe one day, somehow get that Rugby culture injected into the collective imagination and from generation to generation it's something of a trend for kids and they manage to make it to Tier 2 or smt....

* Egyptians: the strongest men on Earth from all I've seen are some Pacific Islander Mongoloid peoples, Samoans in particular, and Egyptians. If you just don't know about them, you just don't know. Trust me you'd know what I'm talking about immediately.
They would produce monster forwards, and super athletic backs. They've got those aerial type, flexible athletic types there. In football for example, you'd imagine the African Cup would be won by Cote d'Ivoire all the time or some black african country, but Egypt has actually won the most. I know they had excellent volleyball and handball teams too at some point; they just need to be guided and well coached.

That's my two picks: Germans and Egyptians.

Iceland. Just researched them on Wikipedia. Proper **** as expected. No one can wish Iceland harm. Just look at the shape of their country. Nonsense. May as well enjoy them before they all get sunk in lava anyway. Found their Facebook page and it just seems to be a bunch of lads having a bit of banter. It would be really weird if I joined it though, there's not even a like button, just join.

I've always been surprised that the Germans and Netherlands haven't fielded stronger sides or taken to the game much, they have a decent population base (also have a fairly high average height/size). Poland I would love to see as well, same with some of the Central Asian countries like the ex Soviet Republics and Mongolia. I know they have small popualtion bases but those areas have a history of embracing physical sports like wrestling etc.

I don't expect anything much in my lifetime from any of these areas, Germany is probably the best hope as they already float between the ENC top group and 2nd group.

Belgium. Our rugby is improving, pity that most of our nationals play in D2 in France. A well balanced mix between France based players and players from the Belgian leagues ( Flanders and Wallonia) would increase our quality. Well actually, just make it one league.

Germany used to play and were competitive a long while back until Hitler banned the sport for it's "overt Englishness". http://www.neurope.eu/article/rise-rugby-eastern-europe

i would like to see the nertherlands as a south africa style team, big powerful forwards strong dynamic backs.

the poles? could be like a better scotland in alot of ways :P

Mexico.

If Mexico caught rugby fever (which I doubt they ever will, but still), then it could have a great influence on the rest of Central and South America, hopefully strengthening the game in all the countries that currently have international teams. And, with so many Mexicans now living in the States, it would also increase the enthusiasm for the game here, too, much like what's been happening with football/soccer over the past decade.

Agreed. And yeah, cool choice with the Mongolians. Surely some peoples out there have Rugby qualities we may never know about that we haven't seen in the current Rugby playing peoples. And yeah about Holland, when I first started watching Rugby I thought "so the Afrikaans are the 2nd best side ever, but their country of origin, Holland, has like zero Rugby culture...". It was weird back then, but now I can't even put 'Netherlands' and 'Rugby' in the same sentence.
All in all, of actually Germanic nations, there's really just England and South Africa.

thing is I'd totally join a group like that, I think that kind of stuff is hilarious. On Facebook, when 'groups' were big, I was part of the "Chinese speaking community", just a buuuunch of random shyt...and friends would ask me about it in real life and I'd make up crazy stories with a straight face until they understood I was completely fkn with them. Ahhh....Facebook. Another tool for deception.

hey btw, the fatal question: are you Wallon or Dutch speaking ???? *psycho high pitched score*
Yes I'd like to see "central Europe" develop its Rugby a bunch more: Yodeling Swiss backs before they charge an attack...that kinda stuff........no I'm just kidding.
But seriously though, Belgium, Germany, the old Frankish people (Deutsche).

Mexico.

man...das...like, seriously, listen....we're really trying to keep a level of seriousness and credibility to this thread here ok ?...I mean, jokes are nice, but come on, try to be serious for a moment...please, OK ?!

USA. If America truly caught the rugby bug so to speak the things it would do for the game would be incredible.

I'd also quite like to see the Pacific Island teams actually get some solid sponsorship from somewhere. I know you'd already call them established sides etc but for places with such love of rugby I always think its a real shame their respective governing bodies never have the cash to properly invest in the sport.

Well, I THOUGHT you meant a really weak team/nation rugby-wise - one that doesn't stand a chance at ever seeing the top tier. Had I known you wanted me to pick a team that actually stands a chance within the next 50 years or so...then I'd pick France. ;)

any of Turkey, Serbia, Egypt, China, Germany. Those countries have Huge influence around their Regions if they catch on with Rugby it will definitely become a worldwide sport since the nations all around them will want to challenge and compete with them.

Eg: If Turkey becomes a powerhouse you bet your butt the next morning Armenians, Greeks and Persians will start building up their sport as well
Serbia - Former Yugoslav republics
Egypt - north africa, arab countries.
China - Whole East Aasia and Idnia
Germany - Central EU and Scandinavia
:P there

i would love the germans became like on par with france

imagine how much passion would be at those games

China would be an amazing one if for no other reason than their population size.

In terms of tier 2 countries - if the USA had a well run pro league the sport would be in a great position.
