Why are international teams always named two days before the match?

I'm grateful that international teams do this as it gives me something to talk about on a Thursday. But it does seem like an unnecessary showing of your hand. Why did it start and why do you think teams are sticking with it?

It's the rules. Same with European rugby and Pro 12 although I believe they're just the day before. They can name it earlier if they want, like Wales did in the 6N, whereas the Schmidt likes to wait until as late as possible.
